King Snake – Sir Edmund Dorrance

This week we are going to look at some of the more popular cards for non-affiliated decks.  To start, let’s take a look at the best 1-drop for non-affiliated decks – King Snake.

So why is it the best 1-drop for non-affiliated?  Well, to start you need to look at this guy’s stats.  A 2/1 for a recruit cost of 1 is about as good as you are going to get for any 1-drop in the game.  Next, let’s move onto his ability.  Making sure your opponent takes 2 endurance loss every time this character gets stunned is a nice way to annoy them and make them think twice before attacking.  This guy deserves a PIA factor of 6.  Let’s face it, if you are running a non-affiliated deck your choices are slim.  You are probably going to need to run 4 of this guy.

Now on a side note you may want to consider how viable a non-affiliated deck is to run in the first place.  It isn’t viable at all.  Until something is done about reinforcing non-affiliated characters you might as well consider this build crap.  I know, I know it is harsh to read, but hey I have tried all kinds of variations of non-affiliated decks and none have worked.  Ok I am done rambling now.  You can stop cheering.

Bottom line:  (For those of you that just skipped the last two paragraphs)

    Non-affiliated = Crap

King Snake = Good for non-affiliated decks

           King Snake = Good Crap!

Ratings:

Non-affiliated constructed deck – 4.0/5.0 ….This guy can be very handy on turn 1 and 2.

Limited – 4.0/5.0 …A good 1-drop is hard to come by in this format so pick this guy for some early damage.

King Snake – Non-affiliated Team week. Here we have King Snake probably one of the best non-affiliated 1 drop out there. You see in addition to his 2 ATK value which in all reality will stun a majority of 1 drops King Snake opposes, your opponent will also lose 2 endurance when King Snake becomes stun.

Burn damage isn’t a huge concept in VS. yet, but a nice little strategy to use with King Snake later in the game is: use Flame Trap on King Snake so that your opponent loses 2 endurance directly.

Constructed: 3/5 – Definitely a must for your non-affiliated deck only team. Use 4 King Snakes for your 1 drop in the deck. Watch your opponent cringe as they lose 2 additional endurance when they stun King Snake.

Limited: 3/5 – A nice draft pick for your 1 drop. Even if you are not drafting a non-team affiliated deck, which would be difficult anyways in this set. Any additional enduarance loss in this format is welcomed.

King Snake

Looks like it's an Unaffiliated week, and if you're playing an unaffiliated deck, you can certainly do worse than King Snake. 2/1 is better than average for the 1 drop slot, meaning you'll usually do a little breakthrough against whatever your opponent recruits.
1 DEF means that almost everything is going to stun him, and the extra 2 damage could give you a little early cushion to work with. Still, the only time you'd really want to play him is in a Mojo deck, and those tend to favor Random Punks or Wildebeest.

In Limited, he makes for nice fodder. Play him early, swing a couple times, then stick him in the KO'd pile.
DC characters tend to be a little smaller than normal, so you might even be able to stun your opponent's 2 drop with him. Still, he's just there to fill out your deck if you really need him. He should be one of the last cards you pick in a draft.

Constructed - 1.5/5
Limited - 1/5

Paul Hagan King Snake, Sir Edmund Dorrance --

I'm usually not a huge fan of 1-Drops, and King Snake is no exception to the rule. Unless my 1-Drop can make a large difference in life totals (see:
Vulture, Adrianne Toomes) or acts as a search-card (see: Alfred, Faithful Friend), then I usually won't play it. As King Snake does neither, really, he gets marks off.

I will give him *some* credit -- as far as unaffiliated 1-Drops go, I think King Snake is the best thus far, well ahead of Random Punks and Lady Vic.

In limited, I'll usually only include a lone 1-Drop if it is good enough.
For the reasons stated above, King Snake is not.
