Play Options 4: Spies Among Us

By Vornargith

There’s a lot mentioned in the Star Wars movies, comics and literature about covert operations and espionage … and everyone who is a fan of Star Wars should be familiar with the Bothan Spy Network. Kyle Katarn worked closely with rebel spies responsible for acquiring the original Deathstar plans. In fact, the New Republic is famous for its intel and covert operatives.

In the miniatures game, the Bothan spy is greatly misrepresented by lackluster abilities — he doesn’t even have “Stealth.”

In this “Play Option,” spies are given their due. New characters and abilities are introduced that will present more covert strategies in game-play. Accurate shot may counter stealth, but it doesn’t necessarily counter the stealthy.

Option: Spies Among Us
All characters with “Spy” in their name, come into the game as hidden. This optional rule is detailed in the miniatures scenario books. Use the “hidden” counters (Click here for Hidden Counters PDF).

A hidden character is represented by two face-down counters … the blank counter is the decoy while the other counter represents the actual character. To keep track of multiple counters, each pair is designated an ID number. When the hidden character is activated, both counters activate at the same time.

The counters remain face-down and may not be targeted unless an enemy is within 6 squares of it. When an enemy is within the 6 squares, the counter is turned face-up. If the counter reads “decoy,” It is immediately turned face-down and placed adjacent to its counterpart. The owner of the hidden character may shuffle the counters and replace them on the same location. If the revealed counter is the hidden character, then he is no longer hidden and remains so for the rest of the skirmish. The counters are removed and the miniature is place on the map. If a hidden character attacks at any time while hidden, he is immediately revealed.

“Spy” characters also have the stealth ability. The cost for each character increases by 3 points. This option is available to Bothan and Aqualish Spies.

New Characters

Also attached to this article is a PDF file containing new characters and stat cards.  Their abilities focus on covert missions and stealth.
Bothan Spy (Rebel) – A revised stat card that makes more sense.
Shadowtrooper (Imperial) – From the Jedi Knight computer game.
Defel Assassin (Fringe) – A low-level character that can be deadly if used properly.
General Crix Madine (Rebel) – Bolsters your Commando/Bothan squad with useful commander effects.

The stat cards have a Ranged attribute. Range will be discussed in the next Play Options. Disregarding it will not affect gameplay so feel free to ignore it.
