Hippowdon.

# 450.

Type: Ground.

Ability: Sand stream.

Locations: Evolve Hippopotas (Diamond / Pearl).

Base stats:

            HP: 108

            Attack: 112

            Defense: 118

            Special attack: 68

            Special defense: 72

            Speed: 47

Hi everyone. Welcome to another Pokémon of the Week. Today we’re reviewing Hippowdon, the Heavyweight Pokémon.

Hoppowdon is one of the nicest additions of this generation. I totally freaked out when I saw a ground Hippo. But once I recovered from the shock I realized the big potential it has. It is a great physical wall, and it even knows how to deal with everything via yawn and/or roar.

Sand stream is great for some extra defense. Remember you have to be careful selecting your team and strategies.

So, the move combinations for today are…

Hippowdon.

Nature: Adamant (+ Attack, - Special attack), Impish (+ Defense, - Special attack).

Equip: Leftovers.

EV´s: 252 HP, 252 Defense, 6 Attack.

- Yawn / Roar/ Stealth rock

- Earthquake

- Ice fang / Stone edge

- Slack off / Stealth rock

I use yawn as my first attack and slack off as the last one, but here you have some other options. Your first move forces switches, sweep with your two middle moves when necessary and you’ll be fine. This is not only a great physical wall, but a decent sweeper as well.

Hippowdon.

Nature: Brave (+ Attack, - Speed), Relaxed (+ Defense, - Speed).

Equip: Leftovers.

EV´s: 252 HP, 252 Defense, 6 Attack.

- Curse

- Earthquake

- Ice fang / Stone edge / Fire fang / Thunder fang / Crunch

- Slack off

This works specially goof if you can use trick room in double battles. Use curse as much as you can and then sweep. Easy set.

When should I use this Pokémon?

Very useful against Tyranitar, Aerodactyl, Salamence and Electivire. It even faces choice band Heracross with ease. If you face something you can’t beat then use roar/yawn and you’ll be safe.

What should I use against this Pokémon?

Gyarados is pretty good if Hippowdon doesn’t know thunderfang or stone edge. If you want a safe bet use Bronzong.

Bottom line:

Our new format is finally passing the final reviews. I’d like to thank you all for your feedback and keep checking this section for our new improved reviews, very soon…

Rating:

3.6/5

Hope you enjoyed.

Airknight This is my first GBA/DS Pokemon Review of the Week, hopefully the first of many. You may recognize me from the Forums, where I mainly roam and mod the Pokemon sections.

Ahh, Hipowdon, the newest and only Sand Streamer we've recieved this generation. Let's begin by analyzing Hippowdon's strengths and weakness:

Type: Ground

Base HP: 108
Base Attack: 112
Base Defense: 118
Base Sp.Atk: 68
Base Sp. Def: 72
Base Speed: 47

Quite clearly, Hippowdon can dish out some physical hits while absorbing them as well. His Special Defense leaves much to be desired. Hippowdon has some interesting Attacks in his arsenal, let's look at what he does best.

Defensive Wall.

Hippowdon @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Stream
Nature: Impish (+Def / -Sp.Atk)
EV's: [252 Hp][252 Defense][6 Atk]
~Earthquake
~Stone Edge / Ice Fang
~Stealth Rock / Roar
~Slack Off

Hippowdon makes an amazing defensive wall, and he gets an awesome recovery move in Slack Off. Anything that gives you back half your HP with no repercussions is awesome. Earthquake is the main choice for an Attack move, getting Stab, and depending on your team's weakness's, Stone Edge or Ice Fang is the next best choice. If you have another Poke on your team to lay down Spikes/Stealth Rock, Roar is the better option here. However, he can effictively set up his own Stealth Rocks.

Yawn is also a great alternate support move here, which can go great with another Supporter on the team.

Choice Bander.

Hippowdon @ Choice Band
Ability: Sand Stream
Nature: Adamant (+Atk / -Sp.Atk)
EV's: [252 Hp][252 Attack][6 Defense]
~Earthquake
~Stone Edge
~Ice Fang
~Crunch

This set is not to be taken lightly. 532 Attack with amazing type coverage and bulkiness will wreak havoc on a team if not expected. And trust me, this set is generally not expected.

Curser.

Hippowdon @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Stream
Nature: Careful (+Sp.Def / -Sp.Atk)
EV's: [252 Hp][252 Sp. Defense][6 Atk]
~Curse
~Slack Off
~Earthquake
~Rock Slide

This set is not as powerful as the others, and far less effective, but if used late game where the opponent's Special Sweepers are gone, this could work very well. The set is straight forward, max Special Defense since you have Curse, then do your best to amount a sweep. I like Rock Slide here because of the PP and accuarcy advantages.

Weaknesses?

Well, Hippowdon has awful Special Defense, that is obvious. Any Stabbed or Super Effective Special Attack will normally OHKO or 2HKO Hippowdon regardless of its spread. If they have Suicune, you'll need Roar or else they will set up right in your face. The same goes for just about any bulky water.

Rating:

8/10

Not bad at all, great defensive wall when paired with something like Blissey to absorb all the Sp. Attacks that will be thrown at it. It has a great ability, the only thing making him worse at using it than Tyranitar is his typing, if he got that lovely Special Defense boost as well, Hippowdon would be a force to be reckoned with.
