Staraptor.

# 398.

Type: Normal / Flying.

Ability: Intimidate.

Locations: Evolve Staravia (Diamond, Pearl)

Hi everyone. Welcome to another Pokémon of the Week. Today we’re reviewing Staraptor, the Predator Pokémon.

With new Pokémon generations we get new birds you can capture early in game and evolve; we had an awesome Pidgeot, a not so cool Noctowl, a decent Swellow and now we have a fantastic Pokémon called Staraptor. Staraptor is one of those Pokémon you train as you progress; it evolves early (level 34) and overall is a great and balanced choice to beat the game for the first time. Talking about competitive battles, it has a natural talent as physical sweeper, it is great for double battles because of its fantastic speed and attack, being a normal and flying type combination isn’t bad at all as it is not that weak to fighting types as pure normal types are, and it can take advantage of both attack types.

Intimidate is an awesome ability for this Pokémon, it is not specially a direct advantage, but you can switch Staraptor in and out to force your foe to switch as well, there are some strategies either in singles and doubles involving this ability and I’ll be discussing later when I finish a special strategies article.

Let’s move on to the move combinations, let’s see what’s up with this guy…

Staraptor.

Nature: Adamant (+ Attack, - Special attack), Jolly (+ Speed, - Special attack).

Equip: Choice band.

EV´s: 252 Attack, 252 Speed, 6 HP.

- Aerial ace / Brave bird / Double-edge

- Aerial ace / Brave bird / Double-edge

- Close combat / Steel wing / Pursuit / Quick attack

- U-turn

The first two moves are up to you, as for the third we have close combat or steel wing for rock or ice types and u-turn is a fantastic choice since the choice bander has to be on the move, very easy and powerful set to use, probable one of the easiest choice banders to master.

Staraptor.

Nature: Adamant (+ Attack, - Special attack).

Equip: Choice scarf.

EV´s: 252 Attack, 252 Speed, 6 HP.

- Brave bird / Double-edge

- Close combat / Steel wing

- Pursuit / Steel wing

- U-turn

Some prefer the scarfer, and this is a pretty good set as well. It is faster than Weavile and can hit hard too, remember to switch when necessary.

Staraptor.

Nature: Adamant (+ Attack, - Special attack), Jolly (+ Speed, - Special attack).

Equip: Liechi berry.

EV´s: 252 Speed, 129 Attack, 129 HP.

- Aerial ace / Quick attack

- Agility

- Endeavor

- Substitute

This is probably one of the best endeavor users since Sceptile. Use substitute until you have 1 HP, if your substitute doesn’t break use agility. Then Endeavor and the final blow is up to you. Endeavor is a very powerful attack if you know your timing, so I’d suggest you to use this set if you are an experimented trainer.

When should I use this Pokémon?

Besides being one good Pokémon to beat the game, some people use it as the endeavor user of their team, I’d say is one of the most common sets out there, but the choice scarf set is a nice surprise for fast overconfident Pokémon.

What should I use against this Pokémon?

Well I gave you a clue a moment ago, Weavile is a good option because of its pretty good attack, speed and its ice attacks. As I gave you a choice bander and a choice scarfer option, be very careful to use it and switch it, and never let it be your last Pokémon. Toxic or spike users as Skarmory are also effective.

Bottom line:

New Year and a lot more Pokémon to be reviewed, this is the first of many and I hope you enjoyed this one and the many more that will come.

Rating:

3.8/5
