Loretta's Toy News - Origins 2006 Report
July 7, 2006

Well, I went to Origins over the weekend. Can't say I had as good a time this year as last; I hauled in a few choice items last year--not so this year. I enjoyed the great Pokemon USA giveaways; play a demo, receive a card box w/3 boosters and 2 POP card packs (just like the sets sold in stores around Xmas), plus, they gave out inflatable POP Poke balls and POP series 2 and 3 card packs. Giveaways at the stand also included were Holon Phantoms posters, 10th anniversary Pokemon Fan zines, stickers, cards, card boxes, etc. It would be nice if they actually *sold* some souvenirs (esp. 10th Anniversary stuff since the Pokemon Center kiosk was completely out of the merchandise at the Cinci. stop!--well, unless you count keyrings...). Someone said they probably don't haul items to sell since they know dealers will be there with Pokemon cards, BUT... and this is something I'd often wondered about... My worst fear realized (what many POP probably already know-?): many unscrupulous folks out there analyze their Pokemon boosters scientifically before reselling them. How does this work? Well, one e-Bay seller I ran into used a micrometer to measure the thickness of the booster--the foil cards added a minuscule amount to the thickness of the pack. Another trick he used was to weigh the packages with a very sensitive scale. He claimed he actually took such instruments into Targets in his area and NO ONE stopped him from doing such. OK, so it's a free country, but, can you imagine if people who sold lotto tix x-rayed them before... (BTW, the e-Bay seller said he thought about x-raying packs, but, that would be too costly!). The seller said he would then sell the foils for huge profit and the unopened packs he analyzed he'd sell for list price to another dealer; ah, capitalism, but, then, no chance of the ultimate buyer having the 1:3 pack chance of getting a premium card! He said the methods were fairly accurate; but, boy, does this put a damper on my enthusiasm as far as buying boosters. So, if I was wondering how one stand was able to sell brand new Holon boosters for $2.50/per... Team Rocket lives?!

(Pojo Note: We know many people use scales to weigh packs as well.  One foil per pack easily solves this problem that plagues Yugioh as well).

One nice surprise in the POP Series 3 packet (since I don't play, just collect at this point) was the Pichu Bros. card; here's a scan from some e-Bay seller: Pichu Bros Card  Cuties!

Unfortunately, I missed the life size Munchlax costumed person who was supposed to be wandering the site; I figure since they said the costume was 120F inside and it was a 90+F day outside... Then again, the A/C was going pretty good in the Convention Center... I heard the costume was tres incredible!

Hope you had a happy 4th!

Loretta
