Date Reviewed - Feb

Cadet-Captain Mike

Name:    Le Rochefort (France)

Card:    DJ #085 (Rare)

Points:  5

Masts: 1

Cargo: 3

Moves: L

Guns : 3L

Hit %: 50 (S), 50 (L)

Ability: Once per turn, this ship may look at one face-down cargo on any ship.

Unlike the other ships we've reviewed this week, Le Rochefort's role isn't clearly defined. One thing's for sure, though -- with one 3L cannon, she's no fighter.

If you use her for gold, she needs a Helmsman, which partly negates her low price. If you use her to run gold home from other small gold ships, she'll serve okay in that role. But Le Fureur can do that for two points less, and Le Pique and L'Intrepide are fully-capable gold ships for the same price. So it's hard to recommend this ship as a first choice for either role. Her ability might be a help, or it might prove useless, since you don't control which treasure you look at.

With a bit more speed, Le Rochefort could have been a solid little gold ship. As she is, she's a mediocre little gold ship, useful only if you don't own any of the better French gold runners (and they have quite a few).

Goldship rating: 2.4 / 5

Gun Ship rating: 2.3 / 5

Boarding rating: 1.4 / 5

Value for points: 2.7 / 5
