Cadet-Captain Mike

Name:    HMS Richards (England)

Card:    DJC #144 (Special Edition)

Points:  13

Masts: 4

Cargo: 4

Moves: L

Guns : 3L,3L,3L,3L

Hit %: 200 (S), 200 (L)

Ability: This ship gets +1 to her cannon rolls against any non-English ship.

I made a point of reviewing this ship in honor of her namesake, one of my friendly enemies, the Dread Pirate Richard. He makes a point of using every ship and crew he can find that bear his name; the Bonhomme Richard with CPO Richard is one of his favorite combos. If he could acquire this English Richard, I know he'd be thrilled.

The built-in world-hater means her cannons are really 2L against most enemies. That's hard to beat, unless the enemy uses one of those obnoxious ships that can't be hit by red cannons. Aside from that, she's pretty average, but the cannons are her reason for being, so if cargo or cost are average, so what? Captain and Helmsman are mandatory. For two more points, I'd replace the Captain with Thomas Gunn the Younger (SM), who gives the move/shoot and a crew kill once per turn.

HMS Richards was available only in DJC value boxes. She's a pretty good value herself. My other friendly enemy, Petty Officer Jake, would also love to get his hands on this ship; he likes powerful English four-masters like HMS Forge and HMS Royal, and this one would complete his trifecta. Me, I just think she's a good fighting ship, and I'm glad none of my friendly enemies own her (yet).
