Cadet-Captain Mike

Name:    Captain Mysion (Pirates)

Card:    RF #089 (Super Rare)

Points:  4

Ability: Loyal:Pirate, Captain, Parley.

Captain Mysion has taken some weight off since his last appearance (when he spelled his name "Mission"). Now he's a Captain who can buy his way out of trouble. That's an odd combo, since Captains don't usually have gold on their ships, and Parley is for ships that don't want to fight. I really don't know how I'd use this crew, and his marks suffer accordingly.

Gold crew rating: 2.0 / 5

Gun crew rating: 2.4 / 5

Boarding rating: 1.0 / 5

Value for points: 3.1 / 5

Name:    Peter Miles (England)

Card:    FN #050a (Common)

Points:  6

Ability: Once per turn, if this ship is touching another ship, she can randomly take as much treasure from the other ship as she can carry.

At first glance, Peter Miles looks like an overpriced version of Leander Arnaud or Sir Meyer Hampstead. But read his ability again; he doesn't have to win a boarding action like those other crew do, he just has to touch the enemy. That explains his higher price tag. I'd put him on a fast, capacious schooner like HMS Durham; she can catch an enemy ship, schooner-turn to make contact without getting pinned, and Miles can rob the enemy blind. It's a niche strategy that won't always get a chance to work, but if it does, Miles has paid for himself in one cruise, and impoverished the enemy as well.

Gold crew rating: 1.0 / 5

Gun crew rating: 1.0 / 5

Boarding rating: 4.2 / 5

Value for points: 3.3 / 5

Draco Starcloud Captain Myson/Peter Miles

Bet you thought we'd be ending the week with another faction's five mast ship from Crimson Coast. Roanoke's been reviewed since 9-13-05 though, so we're doing crew.

The first crew is the Super Rare Captain Myson.

He's a good bargain; I can't imagine why you wouldn't be using Captain Myson with at least one other pirate unit, so the Loyal: Pirate is no big deal (and knocks a point off what the cost would be otherwise). He's got the Captain keyword, so he's good on any fighting ship you have, and he also has Parley, so you might want to put some low-value gold on board in case you want to shoot some sorry bloke without having to worry about a counter-attack the rest of the turn.

Parley's not the best ability though, so he doesn't get full marks. Four points though...good times.

I give Captain Mysion a 4/5.

Next up is Peter Miles from the Frozen North set. His ability is that once per turn, if the ship he's on is touching another ship, his ship can randomly take as much gold as she can carry. Imagine that, getting a full load from a fat, juicy treasure ship without having to go through the process of boarding rolls! Put him on a big, quick ship with lots of cargo for a pirating good time for only six points!

I give Peter Miles a 4/5.

Hurray for another patented Crew-Fer-Two-Fer!

First up, we have Captain Mysion

Captain Mysion, 4 points, Pirate

Abilities: Loyal:Pirate, Captain, Parley.

Flavor Text: The self-proclaimed King of Pirates is either a genius or a buffoon, depending on which side you are on. Though many of his actions are inexplicable, they seem to work out for him in the end.

And when it's all said and done he lords over the only defensive pirate haven in the world.

We first saw Captain Mysion in MI, but his name was Captain Mission back then. At least, I think so. Oh well. Onto the crew!

First of all, you see the Captain ability. Very cool, move and shoot for 4 points, though? Absolutely lame...until you also see the Parley keyword. Parley means you give up a gold from the ship you're on, and give it to the enemy, so that you don't get attacked that turn. Very cool...and I know just the ship to put him on...an HI Raider, like the FN White Rose.

Give the White Rose an SAT crew, a helmsman, and Captain Mysion, and you're off! Raid the enemy's HI, and if you get attack, Parley, and then go steal the treasure back! That is, after you've damaged the enemy ship that TRIED to attack you!

For 4 points, that's pretty stinking good. Unfortunately, he's an SR.

Mysion receives a 4.5/5 from me. For 4 points, he has little to no equal.

Next up, is a snotty Englishman.

Peter Miles, 6 points, English

Abilities: Once per turn, if this ship is touching another ship, she can randomly take as much treasure from the other ship as she can carry.

Flavor Text: The new breed of English sailor—captain and businessman—Miles sees the oceans of the world as nothing more than trade routes under the control of the world's greatest navy. Thus it seems fitting that all gold should flow into his hoppers.

Yowch-talk about a killer ability. Being able to take all the treasure you want from another ship? Talk about totally painful. Imagine zooming up to an enemy ship like the Banshee's Cry, and stealing all of her gold, then sinking her. Your opponent is going to be TICKED.

So, what to do with this crew? Give him a ship like the HMS Dover, from PotSM, and a helmsman. So you'll move S+S+S, and have 3 cargo spaces remaining to steal all the gold you want. Or, put him aboard the PotCC HMS Lady Provost, which moves S+L, and has 6 cargo, and can steal some from an enemy HI! Give the ship a helmsman and an SAT character, you can move up to S+L+S+S+L+S, have 3 cargo spaces, and kick some serious butt. Of course, the combo is expensive, but it's pretty sweet. So...for 6 points, is it worth it? Kind of, sort of.

Peter Miles receives a 3.8/5 from me. If he was 5 points, darn right you'd see him used a lot more. Sadly, the English don't really like to use anything but stock gunship crew, like captains, helmsmans, and extra action crew. Oh well...too bad, so sad. ):
