Cadet-Captain Mike

Name:    La Magnifique (France)

Card:    CC #065 (Rare)

Points:  17

Masts: 5

Cargo: 6

Moves: L

Guns : 3S, 3L, 3L, 3L, 3S

Hit %: 250 (S), 150 (L)

Ability: Broadsides Attack

There's nothing ambiguous or subtle about La Magnifique's role. She's a gunship, plain and simple. A broadside attack can bulldoze just about anything in one mighty blast; even the Zeus wouldn't dare let this ship take the first shot.

Her stats are pretty average, except for the generous cargo rating and the high point cost. Those two stats can work together, though; you have room for plenty of crew, and you'd have to work hard to spend more on crew than the ship cost allows. In addition to the Captain and Helmsman that she requires, I'd recommend Gentil de la Barbinais for a +1 on the cannons, and Capitaine Gaston de St. Croix for a SAT and another +1 against the English. Or you could use Capitaine Arathiel with a bunch of generic crew and go the sac-captain route. The idea is to make this ship deadly, because if you don't, you won't get much for your 17 points.

This is a good fighter, make no mistake. But she's tied for the unwanted title of "Most expensive ship in the French navy." The real question is if you can afford her.

Draco Starcloud La Magnifique

Crimson Coast five masters had really good cargo I'm noticing; every ship we've looked at this week has five or more spaces.

La Magnifique has six spaces, by the way. Lots of room for cargo and crew, though she's meant for fighting.

She's got the old meat-and-potatoes average guns that a lot of ships seem to have: two 3S and three 3L. She also has the Broadsides Attack keyword, so you can deliver some nasty damage if you can get close enough. La Magnifique only has a base move of L though, so she needs a helmsman if she wants to catch anything. What she can catch though will feel a nasty sting, especially if you're hunting the Spanish terror El Acorazado.

She's pricey though, 17 points. You'll need some good crew to keep this investment safe, but you won't regret it. I'd score her higher, but she is a bit expensive.

I give La Magnifique a 3.5/5.

Today we review a French 5 mast ship, one very similar to the HMS Swallow...

La Magnifique, 17 points

Masts: 5

Cargo: 6

Speed: L

Cannons: 3S 3L 3L 3L 3S

Abilities: Broadsides Attack.

Flavor Text: Not every ship can live up to the name "La Magnifique,"

but with Capitaine de St. Croix in command, this ship is just that—nigh invincible when delivering a full cannon barrage.

Eh...I'm pretty sure that most ships can live up to the name of La Magnifique.

First of all, it has Broadsides Attack, which means you get a 50% chance of doing 6 damage to an enemy ship. Yes, this means you can even sink the Rev. USS Constitution with this bad boy.

But is it good? Yes, and no. With 6 cargo, and it being 17 points, you can be assured that there will be enough room for the best French crew in the game.

However, it's a bit on the slow side at L movement, especially when you need to get into the battle quick.

And, you have a 50% chance of getting through with your ability. Which means that if you miss, you're dead.

Eh...this ship gets a 3/5 from me.
