Cadet-Captain Mike

Name:   HMS Goliath (England)

Card:    CC #032 (Rare)

Points:  13

Masts: 5

Cargo: 5

Moves: L

Guns : 3S, 3L, 3L, 3L, 3S

Hit %: 250 (S), 150 (L)

Ability: This ship gets +1 to her cannon rolls against French ships.

This big ship is essentially identical to the HMS Lord Kettering, except she has one more cargo space, and her ability works against a faction you might actually encounter (Kettering got a +1 against the Jades).

She's also the least expensive of the English five-masted ships, except for the Aberdeen Baron, which is in a class by herself. She's sounding like a decent ship already.

Just about everything about her is par for the course for five-masted ships. Obviously, she's a good choice if you're expecting the French to come knocking at your door. It's interesting to compare her with her opposite number in the French navy, Le Dauphin Royal.  The Frenchman costs one point more, has 2L cannons instead of 3L, and is otherwise identical across the board.

If you need a big English ship, HMS Goliath will do the trick. She certainly isn't the best English five-master; I wouldn't even put her in the top five. But, for the cost of a good four-masted ship, you get five masts. Sic her on the Tricolour and see what she can do.

Goldship rating: 2.7 / 5

Gun Ship rating: 4.1 / 5

Boarding rating: 3.4 / 5

Value for points: 3.0 / 5

Draco Starcloud HMS Goliath

With a new faction introduced, Wizkids was already making sure the old clubs could handle the newcomers. The HMS Goliath is a tailor-made French fighter.

Her guns are all average, two 3S and three 3L, and she's got an L base move. So far, so average. She gets five cargo though, so she can take any crew she needs with her. Her cannons get +1 to French too, so like I said, she's a French fighter.

She's got an average price tag for ships that are designed to mainly fight one faction: 13 points.

I give HMS Goliath a 3/5.

Today, we review a ship that fought at the famous Battle of the Nile

HMS Goliath, 13 points, English

Masts: 5

Cargo: 5

Speed: L

Cannons: 3S 3L 3L 3L 3S

Abilities: This ship gets +1 to her cannon rolls against French ships.

Flavor Text: The Goliath suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of the French on her maiden voyage, and so Captain Sinclair and the crew have sworn to avenge the honor of their beloved ship.

Did you know, that, for once, the flavor text matches the ability?

Isn't that crazy? Who would have thought that the flavor text made sense? On another note, did you know that this ship participated in the Battle of the Nile, where the English decisively defeat the French? Once again, not only is the name historical, but the ability makes sense. Onto the ship!

Does your opponent continually play France? In fact, is that all that he/she plays? Then get this ship. For 13 points, you will have five rank 2 cannons! Ouch time!

Even then, this ship is really stinking good. It could even be a support ship. For example, add in MI Hermoine Gold, and a helmsman.

That's all this ship really needs. If you want, also add in an SAT crew, like Myngs. For 25 points, you have all rank 2 cannons, or rank

1 cannons vs. France, S+L move, are able to move and shoot, and can get an extra action! Talk about a good deal. Then, add in a crew like the CC Administrator Scott Bratley, and the above combo costs 20 points! Then, add in FotG, and the HMS London with a captain and a helmsman, and an event like Divers, and you have a pretty nice fleet set out for yourself!

Although this ship may seem very average, for only 13 points it's a bargain, even if you're not going up against France. But if you are, it'd be a mistake not to use this ship.

Anyway, this ship receives a 4/5 from me. Why don't English players talk about this ship, more? It's pretty good.
