Cadet-Captain Mike

Name: Victor de Alva (Spain)

Card: FS #025 (Rare)

Points: 8

Ability: Loyal:Spain, Captain. Once per turn, roll a d6. On a 5 or 6, this ship can be given an extra action.

Victor is a typical combo crew, giving two abilities (Captain and 2nd

action) but taking up only one cargo space. The Loyal keyword usually translates into a one-point reduction in price, and that's the case here. This makes him an above-average value, worthy of any good Spanish fighting ship. There are plenty of those out there; pick your favorite and put de Alva in command.

Gold crew rating: 3.0 / 5

Gun crew rating: 4.5 / 5

Name: Nemesio Diaz (Spain)

Card: SM #SC-010 (Common)

Points: 5

Ability: Once per turn, cancel the ability of one crew or ship within S of this ship.

Spain has two ships with this ability, in addition to Diaz; it's a tactic well suited to Spain's combo tactics. The ability to shut down another ship or crew's ability can be a lifesaver if the enemy springs an unhittable surprise on you, like a submarine or a ship that can't be shot within S range. Or you can use it the moment an enemy sails into range, turning off his Captain and keeping him from shooting at you.

There are as many possibilities as there are abilities to turn off.

Nemesio's price is typical for crew like him, which means a slightly better-than-average value for what he can do for you. If you're planning a fighting strategy, this kind of power for only four points can be a wonderful thing.

Draco Starcloud Victor de Alva/Nemesio Diaz

If you got a San Cristobal and are worried that you won't be able to use its link, never fear. Fire and Steel has released a new Victor de Alva to make your boat's day. He has the Loyal keyword, but that's so easy to work with that it's hardly worth mentioning anymore.

This Victor de Alva is destined for a fighting ship because his two abilities demand it: he has the Captain keyword and he has a chance for extra actions. He's a great choice if you have both a San Cristobal (Rare version preferably) and a lot of luck in rolling 5s and 6s, then this is one of the best crew you can get.

He's a bargain at 8 points if you're lucky, grossly expensive if you're not. He needs a fighting ship to lead either way.

I give Victor de Alva a 3.5/5.

A long, long time ago, Nemesion Diaz began sailing the seas and providing Spanish players with an invaluable service: ability cancelling. Ability cancelling is one of those great powers that never goes obsolete no matter how many expansions there will be. Put him on your best fighter and your enemies will never be safe; subs will float like dead fish, Eternals won't live to see tomorrow, and even El Acorazado's armor will turn to tissue paper before you.

However poetic I make him sound, Nemesio Diaz costs 5 points and I say he's well worth it.

I give Nemesion Diaz a 5/5.
