Pirate Piece of the Day

Crewfer Twofer

Date Reviewed - 01.31.08

Cadet-Captain Mike Name: El Fantasma (Cursed)
Card: RF #017 (Rare)
Points: 7

Keyword: Loyal:Cursed, Eternal, Fear.
Ability: Once per turn before you give this ship an action, roll a d6.
On a 5 or 6, this ship can be given the same action twice.

This is El Fantasma's fifth appearance in Pirates. He started life as a home-island robber in the Pirate faction, switched to the Cursed as soon as he could, and shifted his focus from robbery to battle.

He gives the Eternal keyword to whatever ship he's on, and spreads Fear (a somewhat overrated ability) one-third of the time. Add the SAT ability and you've got a nasty mix of abilities. Seven points is more than a lot of people will pay for crew, but it's a fair price for what he gives you.

Many Cursed players will prefer the OE version (sac captain), though, and since you can't use both at once, this version of El Fantasma may not see much action.

Gold crew rating: 2.0 / 5
Gun crew rating: 3.6 / 5
Boarding rating: 3.4. / 5

Name: Sean "Cannonball" Gallows (Pirates)
Card: RF #020 (Rare)
Points: 5

Keyword: Loyal:Pirate.
Ability: Once per turn, roll a d6. On a 5 or 6, this ship can be given an extra action.

Sean costs you 5 points for an extra action. Calico Cat gives a same-action-twice, a similar but less flexible ability, for only 3 points. Guess which one will be used more.

Or we could compare him to other 5-point crews. The OE Crimson Angel gives both a SAT and a world-hater for the same cost as Sean's second action. Guess which one will be used more.

Unless your plan of action involves more than just move/shoot combos, I can't recommend Sean. If you plan to use a Shipwright, or both a captain and a reverse-captain on the same ship, he might very well earn his keep, though. He's useful, but overpriced.
