Ability: This ship ignores terrain when she is given a move action (islands are not terrain).

Everybody wants to see reviews of all the new ship types in Ocean's Edge. In most cases, the emphasis in these ships is on the new keyword. So let's begin!

The Catamaran ability gives a 1 in 3 chance of ignoring the first hit each turn while the ship is intact, and protects the ship against ramming, boarding, and pinning. That's a pretty good set of abilities, but they're entirely defensive in nature. Hermes' special ability is one of the more useless talents a ship can have, especially in Ocean's Edge, when you might want to be affected by terrain, namely a whirlpool.

Fortunately for Hermes, she has some useful scores, namely her speed and her relatively low cost. This, plus the Catamaran ability, makes her a good gold ship for those nights when you expect your gold ships to get attacked. She can't bring a ton of treasure home, but she will probably make it home, in spite of the usual two-masted treasure snipers. Her cannons are too few and too mediocre to make much of a fighter out of her. But, in a pinch, you could give her a Captain and sic her on enemy gold ships; her resistance to pinning means you can ram, board to steal gold, then get away without waiting for the enemy to become derelict first.

This is an okay little ship that could be very useful in the right role.
