Cadet-Captain Mike Crew-fer Two-fer

Name: Skuld Blood-Axe
Card: FN #022 (Rare)
Points: 7
Faction: Vikings

Link : Freya
Ability: If this ship succeeds at a boarding party, choose two of the
following: eliminate a crew, take a treasure, or eliminate a mast.

Skuld is one nasty boarder; he might be the nastiest boarder of them all. He gives you a third option if you win (removing a mast), and lets you choose any two of those three options each time. Removing a mast is a wonderful way to end a boarding action, since it cuts down on the cannons the enemy might fire at you; you'll almost always want to do this. Plus, you still get to kill a crew or grab a treasure as well.
No other crew or ship that I know of has a similar ability.

If you put him on his linked ship, the Freya, he'll never get to use that ability. The Freya has a speed of S, so she'll never catch and board anything faster than a limping snail. Put him on something fast, preferably one of the Vikings' three-masted longships, so you'll win your boarding actions and can turn Skuld loose.

His price is high, but you get full value for the buck. The moose antlers on his helmet are a bit silly. But don't laugh.

Name: Ethan the Farseeker
Card: FN #025a (Common)
Points: 4
Faction: Vikings

Link : all ships
Ability: This ship ignores terrain, except icebergs, when she is given a move action (islands are not terrain). Once per turn, if this ship is within S of an island, you may mark the island as explored without docking at it. The island becomes unexplored in regards to all other players.

Ethan isn't much to write home about. He has the ignore-terrain ability, which is just about useless in the Frozen North because he can't ignore icebergs. He has the exclusive-explorer ability, which can be useful sometimes. His best trait is that he links to any ship you want, so if you use him, he won't take up a cargo space.

I'd put him on a fast ship and cruise around to as many wild islands as possible. He'd let me look at the treasures on each one so I could send my gold ships to the best ones. Then I'd pounce on the best Runes (unique treasures) and leave the bad ones for the enemy.

That is, that's what I'd do if I used him. For four points, I'd get much more value from a Captain and the Divers event. If I'd already bought all the ships and crew I need, and had four points left, I'd try using Ethan and see how he worked out. He's not the kind of crew I'd try to use in every battle, though.

His point cost is fair, but his abilities are ho-hum, so he gets below-average marks.

Total rating: 2.5 / 5
