Ability: This ship gets +1 to her boarding rolls.
In the Ocean's Edge series, there are 12 ships with
a base move of S, 22 with a move of S+S, 16 with S+L,
five with S+S+S, two with a Dragon move, and a
whopping 58 (including today's ship) with a move of
L -- more than half. Contrast this with an early
release like Crimson Coast, where two ships had S,
21 had L, 18 had S+S, 21 had S+L, four had L+L, and
six had S+S+S -- that meant 2/3 of the ships had S+S
or better. Why is the average ship so much slower
nowadays? Okay, end of rant.
Aside from her speed, the Jape isn't a bad ship. Her
price is fair for a four-masted ship, and her cargo
is adequate. Her guns have good accuracy. There
aren't any L-range cannons, which is a handicap, but
between her guns and her ability, this ship is
obviously aimed at close combat. That means a
Helmsman isn't just a good idea, it's absolutely
mandatory; how can you get close enough to shoot if
you can't overtake the enemy? You'll also need a
Captain. If you want to do much boarding, that's all
the crew you'll want. If you use the Jape as a
fighter, and you have a few more points, a Cannoneer
or Shipwright could come in handy. But if a four-masted
fighter is your goal, the Darkhawk II has better
cannons for a lower price.
All in all, this is a pretty average ship. But her
price is average, so her marks are, too.
