Ability: Broadside Attack.

This was the Pirates' big ship in the South China Seas release. It looks like a pretty typical five-masted gunship -- all L-range cannons, above-average cargo for lots of crew, speed on the slow side. Why choose this ship over other big ships?

The Broadside Attack ability is a crusher (if it hits). You might ask, "How often would a five-masted ship want to inflict that much damage?"
In the SCS release, the answer was "more than you'd think;" recall that the featured ships in SCS were the six-masted junks. Also bear in mind that Broadside works even if you've lost some masts. For the Lady's Scorn, losing masts would be a blessing in disguise. With those 4L cannons, your Broadside has a dismal 33% chance of hitting; lose the 4L's and it rises to 50%, although the damage you'll do is reduced. You can add a world-hater crew to improve your shooting, but that doesn't affect the Broadside.

If you want a five-masted ship with Broadside, you can do better. Almost all of them are either faster, cheaper, have better cannons, or a combination of the three. The Pirates' other five-masted ships all have better cannons (except for the Stoneheart), half are cheaper, and most have more useful abilities. I'd give the Lady's Scorn average marks if she cost a point or two less, but as she is, she's a below-average value.

Total rating: 2 / 5
