Turtle ships were a neat concept in the South China Seas series. The original Proud Tortoise was one of the better examples of the breed. In Ocean's Edge, she flies a Pirate flag, and she's morphed a bit.

Her speed used to be S+L; now it's even less tortoise-like. Her price is unchanged. But she's lost a cargo space, and her lone cannon must be worn out; it used to be a 2L, the best you could find. Her old ability (immune to L cannons) was better, too. All in all, you don't get as much for your seven points as you did in SCS. She's still a fair value, though.

The trouble with a bonus against the Cursed is that the Cursed like their sea monsters, and sea monsters like to ram things, and turtle ships are as vulnerable to ramming as any other one-masted ship; one good nudge and they're a derelict. The Proud Tortoise may have trouble using her ability. If she stays away from Cursed things, she's a mediocre second fighter, with good damage resistance but only one average cannon.

Still, triple-S speed can make any ship useful, and a single-digit price tag is never something to complain about. This little turtle can find ways to be useful in your fleet, I'm sure. Give her a Captain and see what she can do.

“The Proud Tortoise escaped the fate of many of her sisters, who were stricken by the fell magic of the Cursed.”

I don’t have much experience with Turtle Boats, but compared to other one-mast boats I’ve seen, the Proud Tortoise is exceptional. She’s only got room for one piece of gold, but that’s common among her size. What she lacks in space, she makes up for in speed. Her Triple S move is perfect and means you won’t need a Helmsman for her ever. Also, being a Turtle Ship, she can take a few hits.

The low amount of cargo space means you’ll have to be creative in her use if you want her to be an effective part of your fleet. After all, she’s not a very good gold runner with just one slot.

You wouldn’t want her to go one-on-one with anything bigger than her, but she makes an excellent escort for a 4- or 5-mast gunboat if you crew her with a captain, especially if you plan on challenging the Cursed. Put an explorer on her and all of a sudden you have a fast scout which can explore a wild island ahead of your gold runners. Also, she can serve as a troop transport, ferrying precious crew between busy gunboats; being immune to boarding when she has at least one shell panel makes this an even better prospect. Her low point-cost means she won’t be able to move some of the best crew, but there are few reasons to off-load those named crew in the first place.

Her chief weakness is her size: a ram attack will almost always succeed (if she can be caught however) and almost everything outguns her. The first weakness is partially offset by most boats not being able to match her speed and the second weakness is partially offset by her shell panels.

I grant the Proud Tortoise a 3.5/5 since she has the potential to be an excellent support boat to your cause, though you will have to be careful not to let her fall victim to enemy gunboats.
