Personally I like one-masters, always have, especially the really cheap ones (i.e. Rover).  This is a great little ship, though she’s really overpriced.  Seems like I say that a lot, but in this case it’s 100% true.  The ability, such as it is, seems superfluous, unless you add a musketeer or a marine on board, and since the only marine thus far for Americans has a +1 against Corsairs, it doesn’t make much sense.  Still, any time you can get 3 cargo out of 1 mast, you’re not doing too horribly.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, one-masters don’t garner that much attention in the collecting world.  You can usually get them in a trade for a single rare crew or for a couple uncommons.  Harlequin, being three sets old, is no exception.

My Ratings

Playability 2.5 of 5

Collectability 2 of 5

Next Time: A couple of band members (if you get the reference you’re doing very well indeed!)

Name: Harlequin
Card: RV # 88 (Rare)
Points: 10
Faction: USA

Masts: 1 (rating: 1 / 5)
Cargo: 3 (rating: 3 / 5)
Moves: S+L (rating: 4 / 5)
Guns : 2S (rating: 4 / 5)
Hit %: 67 (S), 67 (L)
Keyword: Schooner
Ability: All this ship's cannons have L range.

This looks like a nice little ship. 3 treasure is a little scanty for gold running, but with S+L speed, the ship could make several runs and eventually pay for herself. But her stats and ability don't say "gold," they say "fight." A cannon like this, with an ability like this, is about as good as it gets; the ability means she can hit ships that cannot be hit by L-range cannons, and she can also back away and hit ships that cannot be shot within S range. Her high speed and Schooner keyword are icing on the cake. Add a Captain and away you go, yo ho ho!

What a shame that such fine fighting ability is wasted on a one-masted ship. One hit and it's game over. If you can spare the points, I'd definitely put a Musketeer on her, or better yet, William Eaton (the USA's Marine), to give her a fair chance against two-masted ships. What a coincidence - the point costs of a Captain and Eaton are exactly the maximum points for crew you can put on this ship. But now you've invested 20 points in a ship that can't take any battle damage at all. Wise or unwise? That depends on whether you can distract the enemy with bigger fighting ships while you sic this ship on his gold runners. In a stand-up battle, the Harlequin will not stand up for long.

If you can put the right crew on her, this is a good little fighting ship. If the crew aren't there, you'd best leave her in port; she can't run with the big dogs without help.

Total rating: 3.5 / 5
