Pirates of the Barbary Coast – Smokepot Specialist

Name: Smokepot Specialist

Set: PBC

Card #s 110, 111, 112, 113, 114, 124

Cost: 3

Faction: One exists for all current factions

Rarity: Generic

Ability: “Once per turn when this ship is given a shoot action, you may declare that one of her cannons is shooting a smokepot instead of a cannon; you do not need to target a ship. Simply place the center of a fog bank within S of this ship; it may not touch an island or any ship docked at an island. Remove the fog bank at the beginning of your next turn.”

Neat-O.  This is the kind of crew that makes my heart and head love this game so much.  This crew is so useful it’s not even funny.  Especially for those ships that have stinky cannon rankings.  Got a ship with a 5S cannon?  So what, use the Smokepot.  Ranking doesn’t matter.  Makes for a nice subterfuge.

If you HAVE to go purchasing these guys for your specific fleet, they shouldn’t cost much more than $1.50 each.

Pirates of the Barbary Coast & Revolution – Firepot Specialist

Name: Firepot Specialist

Set: PBC & POR

Card #s BC: 47, 60, 73, 86, 99.  REV: 23, 39, 46, 66, 102

Cost: 2

Faction: One exists for all current factions

Rarity: Uncommon

Ability:  Once per turn when this ship is given a shoot action, one of her cannons may shoot a firepot at a target within S of her. Declare which cannon will shoot the firepot before rolling the d6. If it hits, the target’s controller replaces one of her masts with a fire mast. At the beginning of every turn, roll a d6 for each fire mast. On a result of 6, remove the fire mast; on a 1–3, the ship’s controller replaces another of her masts with a fire mast. When a ship has only fire masts, she must be scuttled on her next turn. When a ship docks at her home island or a fort, remove all of her fire masts as a free action.

Oh yeah, FIRE baby, fire.  This crew HAS to be one of the BEST additions to this game ever.  It’s just too bad you can’t stack them!  If you’re not using one in each of your fleet builds (heck if you can afford it, one on each ship), then you need to re-examine your strategy.

These bad-boys sell for about a buck on Ebay, a good investment I would think.

Tripoli

A one-masted Galley that can only be nailed by L-range cannons. It also has incredibly good S+S+S movement, and a weak 4S cannon. Sounds like a great treasure hauler, right? Heheh...not so. First, it has only *two* cargo spaces. A treasure hauler almost always needs a helmsman and an explorer, unless it has the explorer ability built in. You could make an exception for the helmsman on this guy, but the explorer is required. So that leaves only one cargo slot for treasure. No, thanks.
Then, you look at the point cost - a whopping ten points. Ten points for this? No, thanks. Maybe if it cost six and it had a third cargo space, I'd have a higher opinion of it. However, the hefty cost and the minimum of cargo spaces makes this pretty pointless, even in high point games.

I M Einstein Tripoli - Barbary Corsairs - 10pts.

Tripoli has a large cost for a 1 mast ship, and it has a fuor S cannon. The effect is that any ship within S of her cannot shoot at her. It has S+S+S which is perfect. It has only two cargo spaces which is a major backfire. I would rate this ship a 3.5/5- If you know how to use her, she will come in handy.
