Cadet-Captain Mike

Name:    Bruja (Pirates)

Card:    SS #016 (Uncommon)

Points:  15

Masts: 4

Cargo: 2

Moves: L

Guns : 3L,3L,3S,3S

Hit %: 200 (S), 100 (L)

Link:  Isandro Ramirez

Ability: Fear.  When this ship hits an enemy ship, you can also eliminate one cargo from that ship.

"Bruja" is Spanish for "witch," in case you're curious. This ship is no witch, although your enemies may call her something that rhymes with "witch." She's a fighter with a serious mean streak.

Her cannons are pretty average, although the mix of S and L range is nice. It's her abilities that make her so hateful. You can expect to score two hits a turn, on average, which means you'll cost your enemy two crew (or treasures) per turn. That's nasty. Not many gunships can take that kind of attrition for long. Her other ability, Fear, is overrated and does nothing 2/3 of the time, but if you get lucky and it works, it will only make life more difficult for your targets.

The one problem with this ship is her small cargo holds; she needs a Captain and Helmsman, and that leaves no room for any other fighting crew. But WizKids did something with this ship that they didn't do very

often: they fixed it so her linked crew is a superb choice for her.

Isandro Ramirez combines the Captain and world-hater abilities, and because he's linked, he doesn't take up a cargo space. Now your cannons are 2-rank, and you've still got a free space for one more crew of your choosing. A same-action-twice crew would really let you mow down the enemy.

The Bruja will cut a path through any ships the enemy can throw at her.

The solution to her ability is a crew that keeps your crew from being eliminated, but only the Americans (four), Pirates (four), and English

(one) have crew like that. There are a few ships with that ability, but most of them don't have the battle power to fight the Bruja evenly. That means the enemy will probably have to send two ships, or one really big one, to deal with your one ship, and I'm sure you see the merit in that.

This sea-witch can tie your enemy's plans in knots while your gold ships do their job in peace.

The only trouble with this ship is her cost. That's because of the Fear ability. If they'd made her without Fear, she'd cost a couple of points less, and she'd be a fine value. Even as she is, I'd love to see her in action some day.
