Cadet-Captain Mike

Name: Santa Lucia (Spain)
Card: OE #068 (Rare)
Points: 9
Masts: 1
Cargo: 4
Moves: L
Guns : 4L
Hit %: 33 (S), 33 (L)
Ability: This ship may dock at an enemy home island and load one treasure. If able, she must leave on your next turn.

The "old" Santa Lucia was a two-masted fighter. The new one is a one-masted gold ship. Is this progress? Let's see...

Her one poor cannon rules out fighting in all but the most desperate of circumstances. Her cargo of 4 and her single-digit price tag tell me she's meant for gold, although she really needs a Helmsman to be effective. As for using her ability, forget it; she'll never get away with it. The enemy's weakest gold ship can take her out just by ramming her.

Her above-average value score doesn't mean she's an above-average Spanish gold ship, only that she gives better than average value for her point cost. I could name a dozen Spanish ships that are better at gold than this one, and most of them are better values for the points as well. But if you don't own La Monarca, La Santa Isabel, El San Jose, El Alquimista, San Pedro, Buscador, Concepcion... well, you get the idea.
If you don't have anything better in your collection, and you want some gold for the glory of Spain, this Santa Lucia can do the job.

Goldship rating: 2.9 / 5
Gun Ship rating: 1.7 / 5
Boarding rating: 1.4 / 5
Value for points: 3.3 / 5

Today we have Santa Lucia but this one is from OE. As I typing this I’m hoping for a moment of clarity in which I can think of something good to say. As of yet, I can’t.

This ship only has one purpose and she’s pretty hopeless at that. To rob an enemy home island. With low speed, one mast and a pop gun (so she can’t even fight her way in). You will need a miracle if you even get close. All I can see happening is that she’ll just get rammed by the closest enemy ship and towed back as a prize. Or just blown out of the water if your opponent can’t be bothered with you.

My advice is don’t bother, if you have an urge to go nicking stuff from an enemy home island. Take the Virtuous Wind, for another 6 points you get good cannons, more masts, more speed and more cargo. Not to mention the junk keyword as well. If you don’t have the Virtuous Wind use any other ship with that ability, because it has to be better then the Santa Lucia.

That’s take a look at the costing.

Masts – 0.5 point

Cargo – 2 points.

Speed – 2 points.

Cannons – 1 point

Ability – 3.5 Points –.

Total 9 points.

Gunship rating 1/5

Gold ship rating 2/5

Fleet support rating 1/5

Value rating 1/5
