Cadet-Captain Mike Name: Majestic (Corsairs)
Card: BC #035 (Rare)
Points: 14
Masts: 1
Cargo: 2
Moves: S+S+S
Guns : 5S
Hit %: 17 (S), 0 (L)
Ability: Galley. Friendly ships within S of this ship get +1 to their cannon rolls.

I guess most factions have to have one of these ships, with the overpriced support-ship ability and not much else. This is actually one of the better samples of the breed; she combines maximum speed with a price that, for ships like this, is on the low side (only two are cheaper, Fantasia and USS Seminole, and those have L speed).

Of course, being a better version of a ship like this is like being the best merchandise at a fire sale; it's better than the stuff around it, but that doesn't mean it's any good. Fourteen points for two cargo means she probably won't be an effective gold ship; one mast means she'll fail as a boarder; and that one cannon... ewww! All she's good for is huddling up against a friendly gunship and adding to that ship's attack rolls. On the one hand, the Corsairs have such poor fighting ships that they need all the dice-roll help they can get. On the other hand, if you want an effective fighting game, you shouldn't be playing the Corsairs in the first place. Their #1 "gunship," the Janissaries' Blood, has four 3-rank cannons for 16 points, plus 3 for a Captain; add 14 for the Majestic and you've spent 33 points for combat power equivalent to HMS London (only 14 points with the Captain).

That's the bottom line here. The Majestic is an expensive solution to a problem (poor Corsair cannons) that really can't be fixed. The Corsair world-hater, Murat Rais, gives the same effect on one ship for only four points. That makes the Majestic a very poor investment. Leave her home.

Flavor Text: The Majestic has survived as long as she has by scouting for other Barbary Corsairs. The pay is so good that the crew doesn’t even need to fight.

When I hear the name Majestic, I expect to see a grand galley or a massive 5-masted 3rd Rate French 74 sailing in the Mediterranean, firing crippling broadsides at any unfortunate vessel to enter its range. Instead, I see a small, tiny Barbary Corsair galley with the notorious “+1 Cannon Rolls when within S” ability, its typical cost for that ability, and the usual speedy configuration. Yesterday, the ship Morocco went off the charts for treasure and was not even rated for fighting, and the Morocco was at least a two masted vessel, capable of surviving two shots. This ship is far worse, with only cannon with the exact same ranking. I can name many ships, El Monte Cristo, HMS Bretwalda, Dragon (POTC), Flying Dutchman (PP), and Concord (BC), even Fire Djinn with its 6L cannon is better than this minute gunboat.

At least the Morocco had some flexibility with its massive 5 cargo space and its natural S+S speed, but here we have a ship with an ability that will hardly see much use in a typical 30-40 point game, a tiny cargo space, can’t even survive a ram by a ship such as El Raton, and even is more expensive than other ships with the world-hater ability. Even some five masted ships can be found cheaper than the Majestic!

Also, if I was to compare this ship to American version of this ship the USS Hannah, an old Dutch brig turned into one of the first vessels of the Continental Navy, then even that ship would be better! It can move L+L and it has better cannons and more of them (2 that are 4S). Because of its small size anything with fighting is out of the picture!

However, the Barbary Corsairs are in dire need of a ship to reduce their cannon rolls. If the ship Nubian Prince was sent around with Majestic an aid for her, then the Nubian Prince would have cannons ranked 1L, 2S, 3S, and 4L! Combine that with her ability and you have an unstoppable and nearly untouchable ship, like the fleet Ziotoo4 had posted Here: http://www.miniaturetrading.com/im/showDeck/deck_id/12025/extended_format/true

This can then draw attention from the enemy as a monstrous threat to gold shipping off the wild islands which can then enable your treasure ships to forage the abandoned wild islands while the Nubian Prince attacks. Note however that this will result in severe pressure from the fighting ships to obliterate this ship. Despite this, hopefully the attackers will be lured by the Nubian Prince rather than the Majestic.

By itself, the Majestic should best be used as a treasure hauler because 1 mast in battle won’t last long, and its cannon only has a 16% chance of success. Also, 2 cargo spaces is above-average for a small ship. The ship may be inferior by herself, but when combined with other ships, this ship is truly a monster!
