Cadet-Captain Mike Name: False Treasure (Event)
Card: SC #070b (Common)
Points: 10
Ability: Reveal this event at the beginning of one of your turn: Choose an enemy ship and remove from the game any treasure coins printed with a gold value on that ship. Remove False Treasure from the game.

Our card-of-the-day choosers picked a different theme for this week; we're looking, not at ships or crew, but at Events. In case you're new to the game, Events were cards you bought with points and could use only once. They appeared in only two releases, Revolution and South China Seas. Today's example, False Treasure, is by far the most expensive of the lot.

To be sure, it's a powerful event. It takes all the gold away from a ship, and if you pick your victim wisely, it could cut the legs out from under someone's gold strategy. The key is to hit a ship that's carrying a ton of gold; otherwise, there's no way you'll get your money's worth from the sky-high ten-point cost of the event. Any fully-loaded ship with six or more cargo will make a ripe target for False Treasure. If your enemy doesn't play a gold game, or uses a swarm fleet where none of his ships has a big cargo capacity, you've wasted your ten points.

Picking the right victim is the key to using any Event well, especially this one. If the enemy uses the Santa Isabel, Darkhawk II, Frontier, or other capacious ship, you might get the chance to totally ruin his day.
This Event is horribly expensive for a one-shot deal, and it only works well if the enemy sets up his/her fleet properly for it. So unless your enemy is totally predictable on ship choices, it's a guess whether you should use it or not.

Power: 4.8 / 5
Value for points: 2.3 / 5
