Cadet-Captain Mike Name: HMS Wycliffe (English)
Card: SM #ES-014 (Common)
Points: 9

Masts: 3
Cargo: 3
Moves: L
Guns : 2S, 2L, 2S
Hit %: 200 (S), 67 (L)
Ability: Ramming cannot eliminate this ship's masts.

Unlike yesterday's ship, HMS Wycliffe's role is clearly defined. Three good cannons will make her excel when the cannonballs fly.

She'll need the usual Captain and Helmsman. If you're inclined to add a third crew, I'd recommend Jun Suong (if you're expecting to face
Pirates) or Sir Christopher Myngs (if you aren't sure). Her ability can be handy in the thick of battle, when a losing opponent with poor cannons may go for a ram to try and even the score.

The Wycliffe isn't the best three-masted English fighter out there (I prefer HMS Nautilus and HMS Victor), but she's a good one for a good price. You certainly won't be sorry if you use her.

Draco Starcloud HMS Wycliffe

In the HMS Birkenhead's review I mentioned that you could find cheaper boats to fulfill its missions. Well, the HMS Wycliffe is better suited to being a backup gunner with better guns and protection from ramming. She's armed with two 2S and one 2L cannons. She's immune to ramming, so if you had the chance, you could use her as a shield for bigger gunboats that are in danger of smaller, more maneuverable boats.

The HMS Wycliffe only has three cargo spaces and a base move of L, so she won't be getting too many lucrative treasures for you. Three spaces is just enough room for some good crew though and at nine points you can fit in plenty of generic crew. This ship is too small for good named crew though.

The HMS Wycliffe can't do much more than fight, but it can fight well for a three master.

I give the HMS Wycliffe a 3.5/5.

HMS Wycliffe, 9 points
Masts: 3
Cargo: 3
Speed: L
Cannons: 2S 2L 2S
Abilities: Ramming cannot eliminate this ship's masts.
Flavor Text: HMS Wycliffe was constructed in the shipyards of Boston of incredibly strong American hardwoods. It is said that she can withstand being rammed by any ship on the Spanish Main.

This ship is really weird. Not by itself, but if you compare it to El Leon, a Spanish ship that also came out in PotSM. They have the exact same stats and ability! The only thing different is the nationality, name, and flavor text!

But onto the ship.
It is very solid, and although it isn't used much nowadays, I can't see why. Most of the sea monsters, and all submarines, depend on ramming to get the job done. Because of this ship's ability, they can't do that anymore. Having 3 rank 2 cannons is a blessing. A support ship through and through, HMS Wycliffe will pretty much always get the job done. I wish that she was a little faster, but a helmsman gives her S+L speed. A captain would also be a good idea. Like the Birkenhead, I wouldn't honestly give her anything more; maybe except for a Firepot Specialist.

This ship receives a 3.8/5 from me. She's got it where it counts.
