She gets +2 instead if her opponent is a sea
monster.
This is the first Icebreaker we've reviewed. An
Icebreaker can remove an Iceberg from the map simply
by ramming it. In my own opinion, Icebreakers are
very ugly ships, so look the other way if aesthetics
are a concern when you make up your fleet. Is that
an Italian lady's dress shoe on her bow? At least
her masts are colorful.
Beowulf's cargo is decent; its other stats are
pretty average. She's too slow for gold and her
cannons are barely adequate for fighting, so if you
use this ship, it will almost certainly be for her
icebreaking abilities. This ship also gets a
boarding bonus, with a double bonus for sea
monsters, so between krakens and icebergs, she will
be ramming things a lot. I'd give her a Helmsman to
get her moving, and a Captain so she can shoot after
she rams.
Sigurd Andersen, this ship's linked crew, has two
abilities. One, he can give any ship in your fleet a
second action if you roll a 6. This won't happen
often and is of limited benefit to the Beowulf. Two,
he gives a +1 cannon bonus against the Cursed. This
could be very handy if the Beowulf is duking it out
with a sea monster.
If you expect a lot of Icebergs in your battle, you
just about have to use this ship. Otherwise, she's
kind of average.
