Ability: This ship may dock at an enemy home island and load one treasure. If able, she must leave on your next turn.

There are many ships that let you rob an enemy home island. The trouble with such larceny is that enemy home islands usually have enemy ships nearby, and those ships won't let you steal their hard-won gold without giving you a good spanking. If you're going to try this ploy, you need an edge. This ship gives you that edge; it's called S+S+S.

HMS Gibraltar lets you zoom into an enemy home island, swipe something, and zoom away again the next turn. Her speedy move means never having to loiter in hostile waters. For even more speed, add a Helmsman; you'll still have 2 cargo free. You'll be in, out, and gone before the enemy can sound the alarm or do you harm.

If stealing other players' gold isn't your goal, the Gib can still come in handy. Her cannon quality means you can use her as a secondary fighter, using her speed to chase down enemy gold ships. A simple Captain would suffice for crew if that was her mission. Her cargo is small for a generic gold runner, although her speed can partially offset this - you can be back with a load and headed out for another one before other ships with bigger cargoes have unloaded their first loads.

If you'll pardon a pun, the Gibraltar rocks. She's very good at her special mission, and she can serve well in other ways. She doesn't get a full score only because of her small cargo and low number of masts.
She's a great value, one of England's best.

Sumpbeast HMS Gibraltar

Another ship with a clearly defined role the HMS Gibraltar really is a pirate. With her blazing speed and sneaky gold stealing ability this ship could make a major headache for your opponent. The speed is top notch (S+S+S) and her guns are the best (two 2S). The HMS Gibraltar has a smaller hold (only 3 spaces) but she won't be used for gold running, only for stealing your opponents gold. Park the HMS Gibraltar near the enemy home island and pick off gold runners as they return. Your opponent will have to deal with her (or try to) and all you have to do is lead the enemy ships on a merry chase, taking pot shots and stealing as you go. If she keeps an enemy gunfighter out of the battle then she has done her job if if she doesn't kill it.
This plucky little English ship gets a 5/5.
