Cadet-Captain Mike Name: Jack Hawkins
Card: OE #037 (Rare)
Points: 6
Faction: Pirates

Link : Shap'ng Tsai
Ability: This ship may move and shoot using the same move action. This ship gets +1 to her boarding rolls.

Another Jack Hawkins? This makes #5, by my count. He isn't the best Hawkins (that would be the Spanish Main version), nor is he the worst (that's the Davy Jones Curse version). He's good if you do a lot of boarding; if not, your six points would be better spent on Griffin, who gives the move/shoot and a reroll.

The link with the former Jade crew, Shap'ng Tsai, is an oddity. Shap'ng gives a boarding bonus against the Cursed, but Hawkins gives a boarding bonus against everybody. Do their abilities stack? My guess would be "no," which means that if you use both linked crew, you negate half of what Shap'ng offers (an S-board is the other half). That's not something I'd ever want to do.

Name: Calico Cat
Card: OE #038 (Rare)
Points: 6
Faction: Pirates

Link : Cat's Claw
Ability: Once per turn, roll a d6. On a 5 or 6, this ship may be given an extra action. This ship gets +1 to her cannon rolls against any non-Pirate ship.

The Calico Cat has appeared repeatedly (and had bad luck repeatedly) through the various series of Pirates, which is partially due to the excellent artwork on her first card in Spanish Main. This card isn't up to that quality. But the crew herself is much better, probably her best value yet.

She has a world-hater ability, which is always good, especially on big ships with lots of cannons. She also gives a second action, which is more flexible than the more common same-action-twice. And she gives you all this for a discount price; a 2nd-action crew and a world-hater crew would normally cost you 7 points and use two cargo spaces.

Her link to the Cat's Claw isn't very valuable, because the Cat's Claw is too small (only two masts) to take full advantage of Calico's abilities. The link of Crimson Angel to the Deliverance is a much better combination.

So what's a good combination for the Calico Cat? Oddly, one of her best partners would be the Calico Cat from the South China Seas set. That Cat gives a move/shoot and a reroll, which you'd often use on this Cat's second-action roll. Put them both on something with many guns, like the SM Harbinger, or (shudder!) the Zeus - the two of them cost the same as King Blackheart and give a better mix of abilities. Regardless, you're sure to enjoy better luck than the character in the fluff text. This Cat has claws.

Total rating: 4 / 5
