Cadet-Captain Mike

Name: Poison Dagger

Card: FN #032 (Uncommon)
Points: 10
Faction: Pirate
Masts: 3 (rating: 3 / 5)
Cargo: 3 (rating: 2.5 / 5)
Moves: L (rating: 2 / 5)
Guns : 3S,3S,3S (rating: 2.5 / 5)
Hit %: 150 (S), 0 (L)
Ability: This ship gets +1 to her boarding rolls.

At first glance, this is a mediocre ship. Her cannons are average, with no L-range guns. Move and cargo are below average. Her ability, which is a common one, just isn't that great, because winning a boarding action doesn't get you much. She's too slow for gold, so fighting and boarding are all she's good for, and I use the word "good" with reservations. Three masts isn't very good for either role.

Ten points is reasonable... for other factions. The Pirates have many ships with equal or better abilities for fewer points. Compare this ship to the Adventure (CC #011), for example. The Adventure has the same speed, one more cargo, one of her three 3-rank cannons has L range, and she adds the Schooner keyword to the +1 on boarding rolls, all for one point less than the Poison Dagger.

You could use her as a fighter, ramming and boarding when you can, shooting if you can't. The mandatory Captain and Helmsman leave only one cargo free, so boarding for gold isn't something you'd do often.

Board to kill crew instead. You might want to spend one more point to replace the Captain with the SM-series Jack Hawkins. This keeps the move/shoot and also lets you kill one enemy crew as soon as you ram, with the chance to kill another with a boarding action. Now the Poison Dagger is a nasty little crew-killer. But her sail-away cost is up to sixteen points, which is too much for a ship that has to get herself pinned to do any real damage.

At second glance, this is still a mediocre ship.

And would somebody at WizKids please learn to assemble a ship?

Not only is this ship's mainmast banner missing, but her foremast is on backwards.

Total rating: 2 / 5

Sumpbeast Poison Dagger

This is another decidedly average ship. The special ability does not really do much for the overall playability of the ship. With 3 masts, 3S cannons and
3 cargo spaces the Poison Dagger does not really do anything well. She is slow (L movement) so ramming to get the boarding action will be onerous. A crew with the “super-boarding” ability would be useful especially if that crew has the captain ability. There isn’t much room for losing boarding actions since the Poison Dagger only has 3 cargo spaces. The other 2 cargo slots could be filled with a helmsman and perhaps an expendable crewmember to protect the captain. I am not particularly impressed with the Poison Dagger, but her points are within the range for her size, 2.5/5.

Poison Dagger
Cargo - 3
Points - 10
Cannons - S3, S3, S3
Move - L

A very average 3-master. You can't use it as a treasure ship, because it needs a helmsman to get a good move, and then it only has 2 cargo. No, it was really meant to deliver a beating to other 3-masters, maybe even 4-masters. Put a helmsman and a captain, and then you have a third cargo to use. I see two possibilities for that slot -- Skyme the Monkey or a world-hater crew. Skyme would allow you to sail up, ram, board, and take all their treasure, which goes nicely with the +1 to boarding rolls ability of this ship.

You could also put a world-hater crew on this ship so that it gets all 2S cannons, which can really hurt any ship. This ship is a pretty good 3-master with the right crew on it, and it can serve as a fighter or a boarder. I, myself, would use it as a boarder and steal all their crew with Skyme, but thats just me.

Its a good steal for 10 points, and with all of its crew for boarding it still comes to only 20 points, which is about average for a loaded-up ship. 2.5/5.
Vladsimpaler Poison Dagger, 10 points
Masts: 3
Cargo: 3
Cannons: 3s 3s 3s
SA:This ship gets +1 to its boarding rolls.
Flavor Text:
The Poison Dagger is so named because her crew are known to smear a foul substance on their weapons before attacking other ships.

In my opinion, Poison Dagger is an average ship. It has all 3 rank cannons, all of them short range. This is dangerous, especially if your opponent likes to use ships that can't be hit by S range cannons. Well, then you're sunk. This ship has a potential to be dangerous in short range combat, however. Since it gets a +1 to boarding, it is almost effectively a 4 mast ship. Not too bad, but you want to be picking on ships that are smaller than you to increase your chances. However, the smaller ships are normally faster, and will outrun the Dagger's sluggish L range move. As with every ship, you'll need a helmsman, bringing you up to a respectable S+L move. A captain would also be useful. You can either choose to leave that space open to capture a treasure if that is possible, or you could throw maybe a reroller like Lady Baptiste to increase your chances of hurting your opponent.
Well, since at its best Poison Dagger is average in my opinion, it earns average marks.
At least, slightly average. Go with the Adventure from Crimson Coast instead, which, for the same price, has the same cannon ranks and speed gets 2 more cargo, and has an L range cannon and two S range cannons.
In all, the Poison Dagger earns a 2.6/5
