As soon as I see a ship with a price tag of 5 points or less, I start looking for what's wrong with it. I don't ask myself, "Is this ship any good?" I ask, "Can this ship do anything useful?" If it can do something, anything at all, then its price makes it a bargain. Any time you can add a ship to your fleet for the price of a Musketeer, it's a steal. So let's see if Le Fureur can do anything useful.

She's uniformly sub-average in masts, cargo, speed, and cannons. Her ability is a negative one, changing her slow speed into dead-slow if you fill her holds (which isn't hard). But, given those limits, can she do anything? Here are a few things that even the most mediocre ship in the fleet (and that might be Le Fureur) can do.

She can tow a derelict home; her low speed is no handicap when towing is restricted to an S move anyway. She can pick up gold from the nearest wild island, and get home just as your fast ships are returning from longer cruises. She can screen a bigger ship from enemy fire until the big ship makes its move. My friendly enemy, Daniel Repaire-du-Lion, puts Maurice Aristide on her and leaves her in port for the entire game. His gold ships transfer their treasure to La Fureur, one coin at a time, and Aristide runs up every coin's value by 2.

No, this is not a great ship. This is a very lackluster ship. But for three points, you can't go too far wrong. Her marks reflect her abilities, but if you're playing the French and have three points left over, you could do worse than picking this ship.

Sumpbeast La Fureur
La Fureur is an average ship. La Fureur's hold (3) is better than average for her size, her speed and guns are less than average. Her points cost is on par with HMS Antelope which costs 2 points more and has L+S speed without a harmful ability. What makes La Fureur useful is her cost. You can slip another ship into your fleet and send her to a closer island. If she fills her hold once she has paid back her points cost.

Alternatively add a helmsman and do a couple of trips.

Average marks for an average ship 2/5 she's useful if you need to cram more ships into your fleet.
