I know it’s been a little while since you’ve seen a review from me.  Several factors were involved, not the least of which was my laptop was in the shop.  However, I’m back, and I’m sorry for missing so many reviews.  As you know Pirates is my baby here at Pojo, and abandoning my baby in a moment of need really isn’t my style.  But I do intend to make it up to you all, and there’s certainly enough shiny new stuff for Pirates coming in the next year.  2006 Will see at least the release of TWO more sets (South China Seas and the Curse of Davey Jones), as well as a nifty new Convention Special (The 10 Master), a new LE special figure (The Gale Force Nine), and a new special edition Box Set, seeing is how popular the Revolution boxes were.  AND 2006 will see the return of styrene ship tournament prizes, but they’re PARTICPATION prizes, so everyone playing in a WK sanctioned tournament gets one.  Now that just MIGHT get me to a WK sanctioned tournament.

Oh and then there’s a little movie hitting on July 4th weekend I think some people MIGHT want to see.  I know I’ll be in line.

ANYWAY, while there certainly are more powerful five masters out there, I doubt very much that there are more useful five masters. The ability to be able to use ANY crew aboard this ship creates somewhat of an imbalance towards the Pirates.  It can be especially nice if you can figure out a way to get a couple more marines on board.  Hmm…gives me a thought.  Only having four cargo spots is going to be tough, so look for linked characters to give you an extra cargo spot.  She also doesn’t make for a bad ship to utilize with a Sac-captain.  If she had more cargo spaces available, she’d cost more and actually be more useful – that 13-point limit on crew is actually a hindrance.

Wild’ Will’s Patented EBAY Auction Review 1-22-06

# Closed Auctions: 4

High Sale Amount: $20.50

Low Sale Amount: $ 7.42

Average Sale Amount: $11.86

Average EBAY Store Amount: $16.85

Commentary:  I forgot that I was doing the average EBay Store Amount too.  This ship is a winner all around.  That average sale amount is somewhat misleading though; only ONE piece actually sold for higher than Average, and that was the high price.  Which indicates perhaps I should be using a Median price instead of Average.  In any case, this piece is certainly worth about $10 on the secondary market.  Which for Pirates is on the higher end.  No wonder I can’t trade for one.

My Ratings
Playability 4 of 5
Collectability 4.5 of 5

Next time – Crew-fers return with a couple of useful individuals, rather than the standard old landlubbers.

ChaosReaper Black Swan-

Nice. This is a cool ship. A 5 masted ship (all with 3S cannons, but abusing the effect can make up for it.) with an ok speed and a good point cost all considering. Its good if your not a Wildwill.

(meaning you don't have every single type of crew known to man). Its an all-around good ship. Nice way to sneak in good non-pirate crew in a pirate fleet.

4.5/5

P.S. For those that were paying attention last week, I totally forgot to post ratings. So here you go:

Batavian Bat- 2/5
The Patch- 4/5 using terrain, 1/5 otherwise
Calico Cat- 4/5 (ironically, I got one in a pack a few days later)
Bonnie Kate- 3/5
Richard BLACK SWAN
Rare
4 Cargo
Movement S+S
Cannons 3S, 3S, 3S, 3S, 3S
Point Cost: 13
Ability: Crew of any nationality may use their abilities on this ship.

Black Swan is card #001 and the putative ‘big beast’ 5-mast pirate gunship from the Revolution set. Unfortunately she’s not quite such a big beast as the four pirate 5-masters which preceded her in the first two sets. Admittedly, she doesn’t cost quite as much – 13 points for a 5-masted gunship is pretty good value, especially if you look at some of the ludicrously high points which now getting attached to some pretty nondescript ships in the new sets (think Loup-Garou)
However, sadly, the Black Swan is probably about right in terms of her points cost, because for a 5-master, she’s distinctly average.
Her guns are all 3-rank, and thus have a 50:50 chance of success - which isn’t bad. But then again, they are all short range, which on a ship with this length is problematic if you want to bring all five guns to bear, unless you come right alongside your target.
S+S movement for a ship this big is reasonable enough, but only 4 cargo spaces is downright stingy.
Her ability is pretty feeble too. Unless you are a new player with a very limited range of pieces at your disposal, why on earth would you want to use crew of other nationality, when the pirate faction has more crew pieces than anyone else, and with a greater and more varied range of abilities? This so called ability is therefore pretty worthless.

My rating – 2.5/5. Not awful, but I’d take any of the other pirate 5-masters in preference.
