The patch:

Supports the general pirate theme. An eye-patch. But his effect is useful when your using terrian.

Make all ill effects apply to your opponent. Not the best one, but you can trick your opponent into using terrian and then reveal patch and just laugh.

The Calico cat:

Ah, the scourge of the spanish main, and now the south china seas apparently. The double action possibility is always good. A 33% chance of firing twice is always good. Stick this on a good pirate ship like the revenant, and you have a deadly combination.

Aethereal

The Patch

This is useful if you are playing with people who enjoy using annoying terrain like fog banks. Is it really worth three points and a cargo slot? Again, if terrain is widely used in your area, and it gives you problems, I would definitely stick this guy into your fleet somewhere.
If you don't use terrain...well, he's useless. If you only use like one or two terrain pieces, I don't think I'd bother spending the points.
Terrain can mess your opponent up as much as it can mess you up.

Rating: 2.5-3.5/5 (situational)

Calico Cat

Now we get to a decent crew member. The ability to have a one in three shot at using the same action twice per turn is pretty good for only three points and the cargo space. If you're playing Pirates (and if you're looking at Calico Cat you probably are), I would definitely not put her on your primary gunship unless you don't own Blackheart, as he's much better than this. She goes well on a secondary gunship, and even on a treasure hauler if you want to (move twice). Not a bad piece, but not a first choice due to superior choices.

Rating: 3/5

Richard 1. The Patch
Point Value 3
Ability: This ship ignores terrain when she is given a move action (islands are not terrain).
Erm.. Is it just me, or is this a crap ability?
I’m sorry, but I’ve tried playing games with all sorts of amounts of terrain, and there is always still plenty of deep blue sea left to go round. So what generally happens is – everyone places their terrain, and then sails round it. Very few people risk going through it or over it - and even fewer people would waste three points and a cargo slot on this ability (which is, in any case, possessed by what feels like dozens of different characters across all factions).
I mean, honestly… the inch or so diversion required to sail around a reef, rather than straight over it…? Do people really find these characters worth expending points on?
I guess in a scenario where the sea is choked with terrain, they would be an option… Or there may be someone out there who has perfected the use of these ‘terrain-ignorers’ - but I’ve yet to play with a single person who uses them as part of their game.
My rating – 1/5. Complete waste of space (and points).

2. Calico Cat
Point Value 3
Ability: Once per turn before you give this ship an action, roll a d6. On a 5 or 6, this ship may be given the same action twice.

Calico Cat – what can I say? The original face of the game. I’m in love with her, though I hardly know her, since she’s one of the few cards from the original POTSM set which have continued to elude my clutches, despite a couple of aborted attempts to trade for her. Mind you, she is a rare.
I’ve been on the receiving end of her wrath a few times though. You see, she’s not only iconic, but useful too. Her ‘roll for an extra go ability’, is undoubtedly one of the premium abilities in the game, and the 3 point version is infinitely better than the 5 (or 6) point version.
Now admittedly, there is a nuance here about ‘the same action twice’, as opposed to ‘an extra action’ - although 90% of the time, the same/extra action is a second move-and-shoot combo anyway, so it rarely makes a difference.
I want her! In fact, I need her dammit! But I can’t find her… (What makes it worse, is that I gave a friend of mine a couple of packs as a gift, and guess who popped right out of the first pack he opened? That’s right – the Cat… Curses!)
My rating – 4/5. Star quality. A class act and a beautiful portrait. Shame the character artwork in the latest expansions is no longer up to this standard.
