Pirates of the Barbary Coast #069 – Dominick Freda

Name:  Dominick Freda

Set: POBC

Card #s: 069

Rarity: Rare

Type:  Crew

Cost: 5 Points

Faction: Spanish

Ability – This ship gets +1 to her cannon rolls against Barbary Corsair ships. Once per turn before you give this ship an action, roll a d6. On a 5 or 6, this ship may be given the same action twice.

Flavor Text - Freda is an experienced sailor who once owned a large shipping fleet in Naples—before it was all destroyed by Barbary Corsairs. He has agreed to work with Spain in exchange for a fleet to liberate his home from Barbarossa.

33% chance for an extra action and +1 against Barbary Corsairs for the Spanish?  Nice.  This gentleman looks extremely sad doesn’t he?  He’s got revenge on his mind and he’s going to exact it with a vengeance.  In any case, he’s a positive asset to the Spanish, especially if you’re going against that rare Barbary Corsair fleet build.

Wild’ Will’s Patented EBAY Auction Review 1-27-06

# Closed Auctions: 2

High Sale Amount: $0.99

Low Sale Amount: $0.99

Average Sale Amount: $0.99

Average EBAY Store Amount: $2.92

Unless the rare-crew is a sac-captain or something similar, they don’t typically go for all that much.  Still, this is a useful piece, and if you don’t pull him from a pack, you might want to pick one up on the secondary market.  There are no current auctions for him, but there are several EBay stores that have him, as cheap as $1.50.

Pirates of the Barbary Coast #59 – First Mate Ismail

Name:  First Mate Ismail

Set: POBC

Card #s: 059

Rarity: Common

Type:  Crew

Cost: 3 Points

Faction: English

Ability – This ship gets +1 cargo spaces. This crew takes up no cargo space.

Flavor Text  - Egyptian by birth, but schooled and trained in colonial schools in Cairo, Ismail realized that the Royal Navy was his ticket out of the slums. His ability to deal with locals gets his ships the best deals and the fastest cargo turnovers.

Three points for a +1 cargo, I suppose if you have a ship that has limited cargo spots, and a decent enough point total he’d be worth it.  Now here’s an idea: use him in conjunction with Robinson, neither of whom take up cargo spots, and you have a ship with +1 Cargo, and can be loaded with as many Marines or other crew as she can hold.  Throw those two on a ship like the Lady Provost, and you can get SEVEN other crew members on board.  Of course you’re susceptible to Mermaids, but hey, who wouldn’t want a 7-crew ship?  Also would work quite nastily with a Sac Captain.

My Ratings

Playability 3.5 of 5

Collectability 2 of 5

Next time: This week ends in a blaze

Sean Dominick Freda
The point cost is fair, but not stupendous, so I wouldn't feild him often, and only when I'm sure I'd face Corsairs. The 1/3 chance of getting a double move or double shoot is one that i have found very usefull. Not quite as usefull as the Titan's ability, but useful none the less.

First Mate Ismail
I don't know if it's just me, but I rarely make an english cargo hauler fleet. In fact I can't remember a time where i did. This guy can be useful if you need just that one extra crew, but I don't see myself using him.

Crew two-fer:

Dominick Freda-

Today we have our crew two-fer. First up is the French crew, Dominick Freda. This crew is just like a Calico Cat, but with an added effect that would probably never go off. Just look at everyone's review for Calico for an explanation of this one. Just take away -.5 off of my score for the extra 2 points. That extra 2 could have been another crew or a ship even.

Next is the English crew, the First mate Ismail. This guy is a helpful little crew that gives another cargo space without taking up any cargo space himself. He can really help with crew/tresure laden ships. Just use the unlimited power of your imagination.

First Mate Ismail 3/5 for playing, 2/5 for collectability.

Wednesday: Dominick Freda

For 5 points and my cargo slot, I get +1 to my shots against Barbary Corsairs and the standard "use the same action twice on a roll of a 5 or a 6" ability. The +1 against Barbary Corsairs is really not that good, as there aren't as many Barbary Corsair ships as there are everything else, and Barbary Corsairs kinda suck. So we're paying 5 points for the double action ability, basically.

Wait, can't I just get that ability for 3 points?

Rating: 2/5

Wednesday: First Mate Ismail

Hmm. An interesting ability to be sure, although I'm not sure I'd use it. Maybe in a high point game, and on a solid treasure hauler. In a normal 40-50 point game, though, 3 points isn't worth it for an extra cargo space. The standard good treasure haulers all have enough spaces.
If you really want to make an uber treasure hauler in a game with more points, feel free to put a few of these on your treasure hauler (just leave room for your other crew since you can't exceed the ship's cost!). This guy is interesting but he has limited application.

Rating: 2.5/5
