We like theme weeks here at Pojo.com, and this week, it’s Pirates of the Caribbean week.  We’ll take a look at game pieces that seem to have had their origins in the wonderful Disney film that was a smash success a couple years ago.  In fact, one could PROBABLY trace the origins of this entire game to the success of that film.  And when playing a friendly house game of Pirates, often times in my abode, the film is playing in the background.

The Deliverance is the closest to the Black Pearl as we’re going to get in this game.  She’s a five master with decent, but not spectacular guns.  She’s got that Ghost-Ship ability, which honestly I don’t see all that much use for, and that’s it.  Her cargo hold is on the small side, but I guess that’s because she’s pretty dang fast.   My problem is, that she’s far too expensive for what you get.  Why would I use her when I can just use my Revenant which costs four points less, has a better cargo hold and better guns?  Sure I have to throw a Helmsman on the Revenant, but then again, I’ve never built a fleet where my main gunship DIDN’T have a Helsman

Deliverance POCC #001 Completed Auction Review – 8-15-05

# of completed Auctions: 2

High Amount: $8.00

Low Amount:  $5.50

Average Amount 6.75

A decent value for a five master, and one that won’t put you in hock if you feel you HAVE to have her and buy from the secondary market.  There does seem to be a dearth of them though.

Deliverance LE (#201) Completed Auction Review – 8-15-05

Low Amount:  $8.99

Average Amount $13.00

Just so you’re not confused, yes, there is an LE version of Deliverance, it was available as a tournament prize earlier this year.  Yes, it’s the same exact ship that you can get in packs.  YES it has the Ghost-Ship capability that the other LEs specifically lack.

As I’ve said before, if you’re going for collectables, the LEs are perfect.  Not the first set mind you, the Spanish Main LEs have recently been flooding the marketplace, driving down the prices.  Why?  Because of the Pirates Plunder promotion that WizKids is running.  What?  You don’t know about the Pirates Plunder promotion?  Then go to the message boards right now young lad…

Collectability 4 of 5

Next time – Crewfers for the Caribbean – We’ll look at the Pirates doppelgangers for Jack Sparrow and Elizabeth Swan.  AVAST!

NOTE:  As you can see we’ve lost a few reviewers.  If you are interested in reviewing for this page, send me an email with your sample review of either today’s review or the Crewfer review that should appear on Thursday.  My email is Wmnoe@yahoo.com.  If they’re worthy of being printed, you can see YOUR name in this space next time!!!!

Deliverance

So, for 19 points I can add a 5-mast Ghost Ship to my fleet. The ship itself is not too shabby, sporting three L-range cannons and having all 3-rank cannons. It's also nice and fast, especially for a 5-master.
With a Helmsman, this sucker would have S+S+L movement which is quite good. The only ability this thing has is the Ghost Ship ability, which is a decent ability, especially for maneuverability. It also helps avoid getting rammed by another ship, and is nice for avoiding irritating terrain pieces. The only issue I have with the Deliverance is the cost. 19 points is quite a bit, especially for a 5-master that doesn't at least have some 2-rank guns. 3-rank is not bad, but I really wish this thing had some 2-rank guns or at least another ability to go along with the Ghost Ship ability. As it stands, I don't think I'd use it over one of the other 5-master gunships out there, but it's not a bad piece.

Ghost Ship

Hi. And welcome to a week of my own design *BWAHAHAHAHA (generic evil laugh heard here) Ahem Ahem! Sorry bout that you see I... DOWN IGOR DOWN! BAD MUTANT BAD! hehe sorry. Little dickens must have broken the pad lock again.

Anyway, I better review quick before he regains concious.... I mean wakes up from his nap.

This week is Pirates of the Caribbean week. As the name implies it is a week with crew, ships, and port of calls based on or elaborated in context to the movie of the same name.

Today we start with the ship that the movie's plot circles around like a vulture, The Black Pearl. In the movie it is a ship with black sails, that is crewed by the damned and captained by a man so evil that hell itself spat him back out. Sounds fun. Its Ghost Ship meets the Love Boat. The ship I chose to review as the closest thing in game to the ship in the movie is the Deliverance.

A 5 mast Pirate ship with a 50/50 chance of hitting with her 2 3s and 3 3L cannons. I love this ship (mainly because I pulled one a few days ago.) The front and rear long range masts have the ghostly image a skull imprinted on the mid sail that can only be seen if at the right angle (its BEAUTIFUL). It has black sails, is crewed by the damned, AND has a captain so evil that hell itself should be afraid he would take over.

The kicker to her average/above average cannons is her movement, a L+S before a helmsman. This makes her in the league of one of the fastest ships with 5 masts. And shes Ghostly. She can go through ships, fog banks, reefs, sargaso seas, anything as long as you don't end while still inside a terrain or island.

4 Cargo is a dead give away that she is a gun ship. A could see a helmsman, a captain (OOH Blackheart would be nice or captain Jack Hawkins). A Calico Cat would be an inexpensive double mover.

Excuse me while I wipe my mouth, I am drooling. She is only 19 points, which I know is almost half of a 40 point game, but the Titan is 17 (and a better ship in my opinion, but thats for another review), but with the right crew, she can hold her own.

Review:
Points: 4/5 - for a five mast ship that moves s+L and can move through anyhing, the benefit outways the cost in my opinion.

Ability: 4/5 - Ghostly is cool, but situational. But MAN is it fun to use.

Collectibility: 5/5 - This ship looks GREAT, and should be a GREAT collectors item. Plus its the number 001 card of the set, and its not a bad ship either.

Overall: 4.6/5

Until next time, Your Off the map, Here there be MONSTERS!

DOWN DOWN IGOR DOWN!
