Flavor Text: “This is the capital ship of the Armada de Barlavento—the special fleet assigned to rid the Spanish Main of pirates. "The Guarantor" is often under the command of Almirante del Nero, who oversees his crew's competition with the El Acorazado.”

Today we’ll look at Spains’ other five masted ship from Spanish Main. The El Garante is mighty and formidable, but in my mind she’s far too expensive for a main attack ship. 3S cannons are not exciting, though with the ability, surround her with a couple small 1 masters and you can almost get yourself an automatic hit. But in order to make her battle worthy, you need some additions, like an extra action crew and captain (Capitan Alarico Castro or El Duque Rafael de Moreno y Rivera would work), helmsman, and at least a marine (Diego Cesar Olano – one of our crewfer reviews for next time) or musketeer. This ship would also really benefit from Master Gunner Rogelio Vazquez who gives all the cannons L range.

Out of the four Spanish 5 masters currently available, she’s the second best. If you don’t have the El Acorzado, the El Garante is not a bad subsitute.

El Garante 1st Ed (#SS-03) Completed Auction Review – 8-9-05

# of completed Auctions: 2

High Amount: $7.50

Low Amount: $3.75

Average Amount $5.63

Not a bad value for a first edition from Spanish Main. Nothing to write home about, especially since Buy It Nows from Ebay stores are slightly higher also.

El Garante Unl Ed (#071) Completed Auction Review – 8-9-05

# of completed Auctions: 5

High Amount: $8.00

Low Amount: $2.25

Average Amount $4.14

One of the rare occasions when the Unlimited version is actually worth less than the first edition. Recently I’ve noticed that there are far more Unlimited pieces out there than First Editions, and that’s to be expected, especially since Unlimited is STILL appearing at retail, and First editions are LOOOOONG gone. Still the market finally seems to be adjusting to the actual rareness of first printings of Spanish Main. For four bucks you certainly get a playable ship, though if you’re building a Spanish Fleet, you’ll want to look elsewhere for a primary attacker.

My Ratings

Playability 3 of 5

Collectability 3 of 5

Next time – Crewfers are still happening…I already mentioned one crew we’ll be looking at, the Marine from the Spanish. I actually mentioned BOTH in my previous review, the second will be the Master Gunner up above. Friday’s review will be a FIRST for Pojo, we’ll be looking at a game piece type that we haven’t touched upon in the first 7 weeks of reviews. Guess what it could be?

NOTE: As you can see we’ve lost a few reviewers. If you are interested in reviewing for this page, send me an email with your sample review of either today’s review or the Crewfer review that should appear on Thursday. My email is Wmnoe@yahoo.com. If they’re worthy of being printed, you can see YOUR name in this space next time!!!!

Aethereal El Garante

This is one of the biggest Spanish ships out there, with a large cost of 21 points and five masts, each with a 3S cannon. This isn't really what you're looking for in a gunboat, but the ability can help you hit your target. The nice thing about this ability is that it stacks, so if you have two other ships within S of this ship, you basically have 5 1S cannons and can proceed to kick the crap out of other boats. However, S isn't a very long range for the ability and unless you're playing with more than the standard 40 points, you usually won't be able to get a lot out of the ability unless you keep all of your ships packed tightly together. If you're looking for a Spanish gunboat and you are only playing with 40-50 points, I'd suggest you look at the El Acorazado instead. Unfortunately, it is slower than the El Garante, but it has much better cannons (2S, 3L, 3L, 3L, 2S) and isn't *too* slow if you throw in a Helmsman. If you're playing in a larger point game, then the El Garante is probably a better bet because you'll have more ships to fuel its ability.

I M Einstein El Garante-Spanish main-spanish

To start off Spanish week 2, we have El Garante-A five mast ship that when in range with a ship by it's side, is a killer. I like the ship because the effect is that it gets + 1 to it's cannon rolls for every friendly ship within S range of the ship. The effect makes it expensive at 21 points, but it has an excellent cargo space so there will be enough room for crew.

Cannons: 5 3S. The cannons are very weak, but if you have a ship alongside this one because of it's effect, you have nothing to worry about. 2/5

Cargo: 5. Very large for a gunner. With 21 points you can pretty much put anything on this ship that you want. I would just put a captain and a helmsman aboard this ship. 4.5/5

Speed: L. Like with every other L speed ship I've reviewed, I say add a helmsman. 2.5/5

Effect. The effect is one of this ship's strong points. Just get 1 rover by this ship and a mermaid: both cost only two points. Than you would have to roll a one to miss! 5/5

Overall a 4/5
