Pirates of the Revolution – Wesley

Name: Wesley

Set: POR

Card #: 143

Type: Crew

Cost: 5 Points

Faction: Pirates

Ability: “As part of a move action, this ship may initiate a boarding party against a ship within S of her, without having to ram. The boarded ship may not use any boaring bonuses she may have.

Flavor Text:  “As an English privateer, Wesley raided ships and ports along the Barbary Coast. But a chance meeting with Jack Hawkins in Tangier convinced Wesley that he was fighitng on the wrong side.”

Does Wesley’s portrait look a little familiar?  It should.  Supposedly Wesley is based on the Dread Pirate Roberts, aka Westley from Rob Reiner/William Goldman’s classic “The Princess Bride”.  Sure, there’s no real direct connections, but it’s close enough for me.

Wesley’s ability is to be able to board opponent’s ships even if they’re not touching, as long as they’re within S range.  I guess he swings over? I’ve noticed that WizKids is trying very hard to make boarding interesting, I don’t personally see it as an exciting game mechanic currently.  Maybe if boarding was more of a mini-game, instead of being just two dice rolls.  I certainly won’t be spending 5 points on his ability, unless I’m in a really high point game and want something new and different to try.

Wesley (143) Completed Auction Review – 8-4-05

# of completed Auctions: 2

High Amount: $13.25

Low Amount:  $11.49

Average Amount $12.37

Once again, if you buy this card as a single you’re going to pay through the nose.  In fact, if you check the buy-it-nows for Ebay stores, you’ll see it’s selling for MORE than the average above.  You’re better off trying to pull the pack in my opinion.

Pirates of the Revolution – Chainshot Specialist

Name: Chainshot Specialist

Set: POR

Card #s: 144

Type: Crew/Treasure

Cost: 2 Points

Faction: Pirates

Ability: Once per turn when this ship is given a shoot action, one of her cannons may shoot a chainshot at a target within S of her. You must declare which cannon will shoot the chainshot before rolling the d6. If the chainshot hits, do not eliminate a mast; instead, the target cannot move next turn.”

Now I haven’t played with Chainshot Specialists yet, and there’s really not much difference between this one and the others available, except that he’s a Super-Rare.  Since we haven’t gone over the Chainshot Specialist in an article, I’ll look at him here today.

The Chainshot ability is pretty dang nifty actually.  If you hit your opponent cannot move, which leaves them a sitting duck their next turn.  Sure, they can still shoot you but hopefully you’ve got that covered.  Chainshot is actually one of the better new mechanics available outside of the Spanish Main set.  Use one whenever you get the opportunity.

The Super-Rare Chainshot Specialist is definitely selling for a premium, but there’s no dedicated auctions to list.  Expect to pay between $6 and $10 for him.

Next time – Super-Rare week ends with the Star of Siam.  Pretty name.  Is she a worthy ship?  Only the hearty souls who read the reviews tomorrow will know.
