Curse of the Sand by elements
11-20-06

With the release of the newest set of Naruto, Curse of the Sand, the meta of this game has changed considerably. But what elements got the best of it?

5.Earth

Why is Earth so undersupported? While this set did help out alot, I feel it had the worst showing. With Curse, we were given an actually playable Asuma(Admit it, the old one was kinda...horrible). 5/2 Healthy, 3/1 Injured, and a decent ability at turn 4 make for a huge boost for earth decks, but the biggest improvement this element got has to be for Taijutsu. With a new and improved Neji, a somewhat better Hinata, and a turn 5(!) Hiashi, this element is finally seeing some power. While Earth got a lot of good Jutsu(Attack on Weak Points, Gentle Fist), a few missions really help out the element's main focus; Mental. Using a card like Important Advice, or the new Shikamaru, can really make your team impossible to stop when you stop using your fist and start using your head.

4. Water
Thanks to the new cards, Water has been given enough turn 2 ninjas to make a deck! With the addition of cards such as Yoroi and Chakra absorbsion, a new deck type has been born: Chakra deprevation. With this new crew has also come a new Kabuto:2/2 Healthy, 2/2 Injured, 2 mental, and the ability to remove permanent missions. This has become the new water splash for turn 2. It's incredible versatility, great stats, and awesome ability warrent its inclusions in most decks, no matter what the elements. Along with this, we have also been given a new Water Jonin, Suien. 5/1 Healthy, 3/1 Injured, turn 4 make this a good choice for water decks that need that extra ninja to use their Water Style: Giant Vortex and other powerful Jonin only jutsu. The missions of this set were a bit lackluster, excluding Spy of the Hidden Sound Village, and the jutsu were a bit lacking, but with it's showing in Coils of the Snake it didn't really need that much support, did it?

3. Wind

With a set name like Curse of the Sand, we all knew what was getting a boost. With the new Starter Deck Gaara(Sand Barrier), Temari(Wind Charmer), and Lord of the Land of Wind, Sand can really be it's own deck. But if you've played since the release, you've been hearing about the cheapness of one card: Baki. One card has completely changed the way is played, making Pass Permitt not only useful, but down right deadly! Add this to the very intimidating Wind Blade, and you've got a very powerful wind deck. But that's not all, because if Wind does anything, it draws cards. With the new Ebisu(Repeated Defeat), you draw simply for playing a card that was already great. And Sakura(Kunoichi's Pride) allows you to cycle your deck while charging chakra, which can change the flow of the game even if you don't have any jutsu. Wind, it just works.

2. Fire

With our newest release, everyone's favorite element got the same huge support it always gets, but did it in an even bigger way. The main card that has changed fire is Hayate(Judgement). This is a 4/3 Health 1/1 Injured...wait, no one cares about his injured stats, because he's become the new Fire Haku! But that's not all; even more Kakashi's came with Curse. Kakashi(Late Arrival) can really help a deck that runs 3 or more elements, and Kakashi(Energize the Brain) can be even bigger than Jiraiya(!) if luck is on your side. Finally, my favorite card Fire got, Tide of the Deadly Combat. This is the most powerful mission that Fire has, and maybe even the best in the game. In one move, you can completely change the game, and can be even more useful than Disaster if used correctly.

1. Lightning

Tada! The element that came out the best, and boy did it need it. This element got two new Satoosa rank ninja, and one came in two equally delicious flavors. I'm talking about Jiraiya(Pervy Sage/Releasing the Seal), the biggest Ninja to hit turn 6 with no requirements. But even he's a small fry to Gama Bunta, a 9/0 Healthy, 7/0 Injured monster. He can only be used with Oil attribute Ninjas, and can only be summoned by Summoning Jutsu, but he can be worth it. The god of greatness also visited a little ninja you may know as Rock Lee. With two Super Rare specific cards(Hidden Lotus/Armor of the Eight Gates), Rock Lee has become a Genin that's worth leading a team with in almost any situation. And let's not forget Gama, the best support Lighting has. 2/2 Healthy, 0/2 Injured, and returns to the deck when discarded from the field, he's incredible as a turn 2 ninja. Oh, and the Fourth Hokage is good too, but you don't need me telling you that ;)

Well, that's the elemental breakdown of Curse of the Sand. This set really gave the support to what needed it, and made a few new decks possible. While I'm more a fan of Coils myself, this set is going to make an impact for sets to come.

Always gaming,

N. Jolly
