Shizune
[Ardent Soldier]
#N-995

Reviewed Dec. 14, 2010

Average Card Rating

Limited: 2.00
Unlimited: 1.88
Block: 2.25

Ratings are based on a 1 to 5 scale.
1 being the worst.
3 = average.
5 is the highest rating.

Beastly Mage

Shizune

Today's card is one that helps Medical Decks. While this Shizune is on the field (healthy) and you have two or more Medical Ninjas out any Jutsu your opponent uses that targets any of your Ninjas will cost one more Colorless to play. This is good in Unlimited since a lot of targeting Jutsus still abound there. It's also good in Block when facing Water. It's a good option for Medical Decks, though I'd go for Sideboard rather than Maindeck on this one.

Ratings:

Limited: 2.5/5
Constructed: 3/5 (Medical Maindeck)
Block: 3/5 (Medical Sideboard)

N-995 Shizune [Ardent Soldier]
=======================

Today's card is the latest version of Shizune, and a mediocre one at it. In the right deck, it's not hard to pull off her effect, but it is not terribly devastating. Making your opponent's jutsus that target your team is annoying and can mess up some combos, so it isn't entirely useless. A decent card for medical decks.

Prong

Shizune n995

She swiftly shoots strongly stopping soiled spikes.

This chick seems underwhelming when you think of her as a hardly-attainable, one-time stepping stone for your opponent.

"Oh, 1 chakra. Big deal! And it requires 2 Medical ninjas? No thanks; I'll stick with [MK]."

What that hypothetical over-looker may not realize is that (1) an extra chakra for 90% of their jutsus adds up and (2) she counts herself towards the condition for her effect, so you only need one other Medical ninja, and with how many playable Medical ninjas there are these days, this condition is by no means difficult to meet.

Limited: 2/5 Her stats are decent for the turn, and she is a vanilla (basically, no effect text) unless you pull another Medic as well.

Unlimited (Constructed): 2.5/5 She is good, but she doesn't shine in Unlimited decks as much as she does in Block decks.

Block: 3/5 She isn't the best Turn 4 we have (in Block), but in decks that use or even splash Medical ninjas, she should be handy.

Julio

Shizune [Ardent Soldier] is overall weak.

"While you have 2 or more "medical" Ninjas, your opponent's jutsu cards that target your ninjas cost 1 more to use"

It's easy to pay the price, especially with a no hand water deck.  Chidori is only two chakra and paying three isn't much of a big deal.

The effect isn't valid. It's only a mental power 1? That's pretty bad considering lower turn marker ninjas have triple or even quadruple that amount.  The support isn't bad though.  This card isn't likely to be played over [Medical Kunoichi] either way.  For the exact same healthy and injured stats but much better effect... I'd skip on [Ardent Soldier] but I will say this much... making your opponent pay that extra chakra is funny when you end up playing Counter or Chakra Punch.

Still... just not worth the space.

Block: 1/5
[Medical Kunoichi] is better and worth the investment

Unlimited: 1/5
not likely to be used
