Asuma Sarutobi, Reliable Comrade

Card Number: N-194

Review Date: 05.24.07

Average Card Rating

Constructed: 2.89
Limited: 3.00

Ratings are based on a 1 to 5 scale 1 being the worst.
3 ... average. 5 is the highest rating.

Swordmaster
13

This version of Asuma has the same stats as the one from Revenge and Rebirth at 6/2, but his effect is slightly more useful. Pair him with Kurenai and he becomes a 7/2. This Asuma and the new Kurenai together make a team of 11 by themselves, but him and the old Kurenai make 10. More than likely you'll want to run this Asuma in a Wind/Earth Deck, possibly a Kunoichi deck as they are no Female ninja at Turn 5 yet other than the new Kurenai. You'll definitely find this one more useful over all as his effect is fairly good.

Limited:3/5(Big ninjas are nice in Limited)
Constructed:3/5(His effect isn't bad considering the decks he can go into)

Beastly Mage

Asuma Sarutobi (n194)

True story, not made up: I have a cosplay activity and I decided to cosplay as this guy. Growing a beard is not an easy thing when it's 100+ degrees outside. XD This card is pretty OK, I guess. It only gets its effect when it's paired up with Kurenai. Not much to say about this card. In the right deck it ownz, but anywhere else Barbecue goes better.

Ratings:

Constructed: 3/5
Limited: 3/5
Art: 4/5

Akira

Asuma Sarutobi [Reliable Comrade]
Valid: While this ninja is in the same team as "Kurenai Yuhi", this ninja gets +1/+0.

++Pros++
Turn 5 Earth, w00t
Decent Combat

--Cons--
Turn 5
needs Kurenai for effect
effect isn't worth running this card

Asuma Sarutobi. As one of my favorite characters, this kind of makes me sad to not see any good cards of him not out yet. Asuma Sarutobi [Instant Elimination] is better than this, but still not that great.

I wouldn't run Asuma period unless you need a decent heavy hitter.

Art: 3/5
Combat/Support/Injured: 3/5
Effect: 1/5

We need a better Asuma Bandai!

SmittySensei here once again to review our old bearded friend Asuma Sarutobi, in his Reliable Comrade form.

My first impression of this card is that he would be a great run in mental power decks. Most all of the effective mental decks are Earth/Wind, and Asuma falls under the Earth category whereas his "reliable comrade" Kurenai falls under the Wind element. As you can see, this makes his effect a bit easier to run due to their common arche types. He's also great in a mental deck because of his 6 attack power, which gives you greater stability if your mental cards are taken down and you're left running physical teams.

At first it looked like (to me at least) his effect would be a little too limited by requiring a specific other Ninja, but after thinking about it a little more I realized that I run two Kurenai in my Water/Wind build and I always seem to get her out on the field, proving that he may be versatile enough to run effectively. Of course this is all assuming that you have his hand cost, which sadly hinders this card's versatility because it's Earth, the least supported element.

In limited Asuma is a pretty good pick if you pull other earth cards, but unfortunately that's unlikely to happen due to the fact that Earth just doesn't have the support to hold you over in that type of tournament. Another thing dragging his limited score down is the fact that his effect calls for a Kurenai, which would be hard to pull of in this instance of a limited tourny. Due to this I'm going to have to take his limited score down a good bit.

Overall he's a good card to run in mental decks, but other than that I suggest you run the other Asumas from the past sets.

AJ Bisio

Asuma Sarutobi (Reliable Comrade)

Today’s Card, Asuma Sarutobi (RC), is a big ninja for earth who has not yet received a six drop ninja after 5 sets. Asuma is a pretty generic 5 drop. He has ok stats (6/2 3/1 also Kisame’s stats) and an ok effect (gets +1 when Kurenai is on his team). This effect seems to be exclusive to earth ninjas (Ino, Shika, Cho and their parents) and has proven to be very inconsistent and no where near tournament worthy (though some may disagree with me).

Overall, Asuma is almost the equivalent of an ok vanilla ninja and will see very little to no play (considering he also has to compete with his previous, superior incarnations).

Constructed: 1/5 (Come on Bandai, give earth something it can use)
Limited: 3.5/5 (big ninjas are always good in limited)
Art: 2.5/5 (Pretty boring)
