Great White and an Akroma EDH deck - Jake

July 8, 2009

When I first started playing Magic:the Gathering.  I, like many new players, felt green was the best.  It's all about big creatures and ramping mana to do your big spells.  After playing green I looked towards other colors.  I soon grew to loving black.  Black is still my favorite color to this day for it's removal, big demons, and disruption.

So looking at the last few sets, you'd think there would be some awesome black removal.  There's not.  It's all white.  The best removal as of late has been in white.  Some I've talked to would even consider them the best cards of the set as a whole.

Cards I'm speaking of include:

  • Oblivion Ring
  • Hallowed Burial
  • Path to Exile
  • Celestial Purge
  • Martial Coup
  • Unmake(hybrid but still)

While there are other great removal in other colors, the pure utility of being able to remove creatures/nonlands from the game is what puts them ahead.  After examining some of the recent white cards and cards of the past I decided on what to do about it.  Can't beat it, join it.  I had purchased Angels vs. Demons duel deck and what better way to use my alternate art Akroma then a Elder Dragon Highlander deck.

General:
Akroma, Angel of Wrath

I usually make my EDH decks tuned to multiplayer and this is no exception.

Some tips on playing the deck:

Idea is to ramp up and rule over with cards like Pristine Angel, Konda, and the general.

Gift of Estates, knight of the white orchid, and weathered wayfarer ensure you keep up with your green playing friends.

There's also an Enchantment theme with all the white neutralization like pacifism.  Be sure to get out Sigil of the Empty Throne before casting them to get your angels.  Idyllic tutor can get you any of the great options.  I usually go for Prison term early to scare them from playing thier general or other threat.

Mass Calcify, Sunscour, Wrath should ensure there's nothing in the way for your bombs to get through.

Mobilization+Knight Captain of Eos can be a nice fog lock as well as a way to recover from your own wraths.

Overall the deck plays pretty well and isn't too bad pricewise especially if there are people willing to trade.  Until next time have fun playing white.
