More Questions

Q: How does Lancers en-Kor work?

-Appp

A: You set up shields, and if damage would be dealt to the Lancers, it is dealt to the creature you redirected it to instead. Basically, this means as long as another creature is on his side of the board, he can choose if the Lancers die or not if you target them.

---

Q: I have an Auriok Steelshaper and a Skullclamp in play. If I equip the clamp to the Steelshaper, would the creature die due to having 0 toughness, or would it become a 3/1?

A: I answered this question in my column titled "What Good is Master Decoy?", dated 10 February. It was question 11 in that column.

---

Q: When I play Goblin Charbelcher's ability, do I have to announce a target before I reveal the cards from my library?

-Michael

A: Yes. Charbelcher asks for a target, so you have to say what you are targeting when you play Charbelcher's ability.

---

Q: If I counter something with Grip of Amnesia and they don't have a graveyard is it automatically countered or does the spell fizzle because they have no cards in their graveyard?

-Albert C.

A: Neither, because they still have a graveyard. It just doesn't have any cards in it, so he can remove his (empty) graveyard to prevent his spell from being countered.

---

Q: If I use Shifty Doppleganger on Phage the Untouchable to attack and win the game, Do I lose do to Phage's "When Phage the Untouchable comes into play, if you didn't play it from your hand, you lose the game" ability, even if She comes from the hand?

-Cid

A: The Doppelganger is already in play. So when it changes forms to Phage, it is not "coming into play," because it is already in play.

Tournament Report - FNM - Diamond Bar, CA - Top 4

Well, time to try out a semi-new deck. Fresh from German regionals, we have ...

U/W Control

3 Eternal Dragon

2 Akroma's Vengeance

4 Damping Matrix

4 Decree of Justice

4 Mana Leak

3 Pulse of the Fields

3 Rewind

3 Stifle

4 Thirst for Knowledge

4 Wrath of God

4 Cloudpost

4 Coastal Tower

4 Flooded Strand

5 Island

7 Plains

2 Temple of the False God

Sideboard:

2 Annul

4 Circle of Protection: Red

1 Rewind

2 Mind's Eye

1 Mindslaver

4 Purge

1 Stifle

I wasn't so sure about the Thirsts, but I always like to run it as is at first. Although I did change a Discombobulate in the board for the 4th Rewind.

Round 1 - Ting-An H. - TwelvePost variant

Game 1 - His is the better control deck, as I am able to counter the first 2 Slides, but a Slide hits, and then Tooth and Nail for a couple Sundering Titans works over my mana. I lose in short order.

Sideboard: In: 2 Annul, 2 Mind's Eye, Rewind, Stifle. Out: 2 Pulse of the Fields, 2 Damping Matrix, Thirst for Knowledge, Decree of Justice.

Game 2 - He gets mana screwed, and I am able to finish him off before he gets his footing.

Game 3 - He takes very early control, with a turn 4ish Sundering Titan with Slide on the board. I have no chance here.

Games: 1-2, Matches: 0-1

Round 2 - Jose G. - Mono Red Land Destruction

Game 1 - Pulse of the Fields does wonders here, as he attacks my mana base, but not enough for me to lose control. A couple cycled Decrees for 4 finishes him off.

Sideboard: In: 4 Circle of Protection: Red. Out: 2 Stifle, Eternal Dragon, Damping Matrix.

Game 2 - Turn 3 CoP: Red leaves him in a quandary for a while. He eventually drops Culling Scales, which kills the Cop, and then kills his only attacker, a Slith Firewalker. He has a Hammer of Bogarden, but I have a Pulse again, and eventually cast and swing with a Dragon for the win.

Games: 3-2, Matches: 1-1

Round 3 - Chris B. - Old DiscipleTog

She is quite pissed as I tell her we're playing, as I'm paired down.

Game 1 - She gets the quick Disciple, but I know this is an unpowered version *no Ravagers or Skullclamps), so I take my time before I Wrath, taking control with Pulse of the Fields first. After I Wrath, I cycle a couple of Decrees for 8 on consecutive turns to win.

Sideboard: In: 4 Purge. Out: 3 Stifle, Eternal Dragon.

Game 2 - She gets no offense this game, as I get turn 3 Damping Matrix, which screws her plan. A couple of Shrapnel Blasts and Flooded Strand activations take me to 8 before I take control and cycle a Decree for 12.

Games: 5-2, Matches: 2-1.

Round 4 - Tim C. - Slide

Game 1 - He gets down the quick Rift, and after I get up to Vengeance mana and Vengeance it away, he drops another Rift. I scoop to save time.

Sideboard: In: 4 CoP: Red, 2 Annul, 2 Mind's Eye, Mindslaver, Rewind. Out: 4 Wrath of God, 3 Damping Matrix, 3 Stifle.

Game 2 - I open wit 2 mana, but more importantly, 3 CoP Red in my hand. He doesn't have any green, so I manage to make him drop 3 Rifts (while discarding 2 Cop and drawing the 4th) before I Vengeance and drop the other.

Somewhere in there, I play some Pulse tricks against his Wrath, and he Rifts himself once to get rid of it. I recur and cast a Dragon, and go to town.

Game 3 - Another turn 2 CoP: Red makes him drop a Grid Monitor. That's fine, as I have the Pulse to counteract it. I drop a Slaver and make him waste his burn, and when I'm ready, I Slaver him and cycle a Decree for >18. Since he Rifted himself once (during Pulse tricks again), that's match.

Games: 7-3, Matches: 3-1

Round 5 - Alex V. - BG Cemetery (with Death Cloud)

Game 1 - I Mulligan a hand of Plains, Cloudpost, and 5 blue cards, and keep the 6. I don't touch him, as an early Death Cloud for 1 disrupts me enough to let him get through.

Sideboard: In: 2 Mind's Eye, Rewind. Out: Eternal Dragon, Pulse of the Fields, Thirst for Knowledge.

Game 2 - I get to mulligan a hand of Island, Cloudpost, 2 Decree, Akroma's Vengeance, Thirst, and one card I don't remember. I keep the 6. He also mulligans.

Stupid Pulse tricks keep me alive, as he gets a slow start. I am able to counter his Cloud for 3, and I drop Mind's Eye and reap the benefits.

Game 3 - He keeps a hand with 1 mana and 2 Birds, and fails to draw land for the first few turns. He tries to Clamp away his Birds, but I Stifle the card draw. He tries Sylvan Scrying, but it is countered as well. I drop Matrix and Mind's Eye, and wait out the long game. A cycled Decree for 7 sends me into the top 8.

Games: 9-4, Matches: 4-1

Alex makes the top 8 too (as the 7 seed), so it's all good.

I have crap tiebreakers, so I am the worst of the 4-1's (5 seed), playing ...

Top 8 - Joey C. - Mono Red Control

Game 1 - Somewhere around the time I realize he's attacking with Viashino Sandstalker and Pulsing me, he Shrapnel Blasts me into game 2.

Sideboard: In: 4 CoP: Red, 1 Mindslaver. Out: 3 Stifle, Eternal Dragon, Wrath of God.

Game 2 - He gets the Slith down quickly, but I Wrath it away and cast Mindslaver with a CoP out. That causes him to blow his hand, and when I am good and ready, I blow the Slaver, and cycle a Decree for 12.

Games: 11-4, Matches: 5-1

The top 4 split, and I am able to go home.

See you Friday.
