MANTRA 10

Mantra 10: There is a space, after blockers are declared, where both players can play spells and abilities before damage is put on the stack. (17 Oct 2003)

For example:

-You can cast Giant Growth and make the creature do more damage.

-You can cast Shrink to make the creature do less damage.

-You can cast Predator's Strike to make it bigger and be able to trample over.

---

Q: With Mindslaver, is it possible, when you take your opponents turn, to tap out all his land at the end of that turn just because you don't want him/her to be able to play another spell until his next turn? (I know they won't lose life due to mana burn.)

-Pam P.

A: Yes.

---

Q: Are lands permanents?

-David

A: When they are in play, yes.

---

Q: I am attacked by a knight that has flanking. I decided to block the knight with one of my creatures, who was a 1/1. To save my creature from dying I cast Shrink. I assumed that the damage was lowered by five and I would survive, but others argued that since the attacker had flanking the 1/1 creature I blocked with would still die. My question is done flanking alone kill a creature or does damage have to be inflicted by the attacker?

A: If a creature's toughness is reduced to 0 at any time, it dies immediately. So your creature would die before damage is put on the stack.

---

Q: I had a Wall of Shadows (0/1, prevent all damage dealt to Wall of Shadows by creatures it's blocking). If the Flanking knight attacks and you block with the Wall does the Wall die?

-Chris K.

A: Yes. Flanking is not damage.

---

Q: My opponent has a Darkest Hour and Light of Day in play, I have a Faerie Conclave. What color is my Faerie Conclave when I make it a creature?

-Björn L.

A: It is black. When you play the ability of Faerie Conclave, it sets its base characteristics, which include color. You then take the Darkest Hour into account, and it becomes black. (This will apply to any man land you activate.)

---

Q: I play Chain of Vapor. My opponent decides to sac a land to copy the spell. I then play Brain Freeze. Does the copied spell count towards the storm ability?

A: No. The copy wasn't played, it was simply put onto the stack. See Mantra 6.

---

Q: I played a Pincher Beetles. Then, my opponent blocked my creature, but my card said it can't be affected by spells or abilities. I thought spells were also creatures too. So my opponent says that it doesn’t count for creatures, even though they are spells. Who's Right?

A: Nowhere in the rules does combat damage use the word target. The Pincher Beetles die. See Mantra 3.

---

Q: My opponent plays a 1/1 creature and I use an instant to give it -1/-1, so the creature becomes a 0/0. Does that creature die with no toughness left?

A: Yes, it dies because it has a toughness of less than 1.

---

Q: Why didn't the 8th edition rulebook contain old character mechanics like, banding, rampage, fading, echo, shadow?

-ratabulous

A: Because the Eighth Edition rulebook, included with The Core Game, only lists the basic mechanics necessary to learn the game with the cards the provide you. The Comprehensive Rulebook, with all the rules for any situation you may encounter, can be found at http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dci/oracle.

---

Q: If you have 2 Viridian Longbows on a creature, does it hit for two when you tap it? Or does the tapping only pay for one of them?

A: The tapping only pays the cost to activate one of the cards, so you can only do one damage per time you tap the creature.

---

Q: If a card reads "whenever this creature deals combat damage...", and it has a Viridian Longbow and taps to use it, does that damage count as combat damage?

-Mr. Warburton

A: No. See last Friday's column, question 13 (Goblin Sharpshooter).

---

Q: If my opponent controls a Mirari's Wake and I play Blatant Thievery, taking the Wake, does my opponent and I get the effect, or what?

-James P.

A: Only the controller of Mirari's Wake will get its effect. Since you took control of it with Blatant Thievery, you are the only one that will get its effect.

---

Q: With Spellweaver Helix, what happens when you imprint 2 cards with the same name and you play one? Would it go infinite, make two copies (Because it shares a name with both), make one copy, or make nothing?

A: It would only make one copy. The copy isn't played, it is just put on the stack. See Mantra 6.

---

Q: Also, if you set up two Helixes imprinted with the same two cards (Lets say they each have a Firebolt and a Molten Rain), would they chain off each other to make infinite copies of each?

-James

A: No. See above.

---

Q: If I have 2 Seedborn Muse in play, does that mean my permanents untap twice during each turn?

-Guy

A: No. Seedborn Muse alters the rules of your opponents' untap steps, making multiple Seedborn Muses controlled by the same player redundant. So you'll only untap once each turn (due to your normal untap during your turn, since Seedborn Muse doesn't affect your turn, and then from both Seedborn Muses in your opponents' turns.)

See you Tuesday.
