White Weenie with Champions

10.04.04

(As a side note, someone sent me a request to find a Killer Deck from Inquest #1 a while back, and I had some trouble finding it. Thanks to a buddy and his connections, I have that list -- but I don't have the e-mail address of the person requesting it. Could whoever sent me that request resend it? Apparently, AOL deletes my e-mail after two weeks.)[

Hey all, and welcome to this week’s Magic Deck Garage! Champions of Kamigawa went on sale this week, and it looks like a great addition to the metagame. Speaking of Champions, I wouldn’t feel quite right fixing a deck without the new stuff, and I received just the deck this week: White Weenie!

Here’s the e-mail I received…

Hi my name is Wayne I've been playing magic for about 2 years now and to be honest my decks aren't the best but they win me games this is my type 2 white weenie deck I don't have a budget and this is for type 2 tournaments.

CREATURES(20)

Savannah Lions x4

Isamaru, Hound of Konda x4

Leonin Skyhunter x4

Auriok Champion x4

Razor Golem x4

OTHER SPELLS(16)

Glorious Anthem x4

Worship x4

Holy Day x4

Wrath of God x4

Lands(24)

Plains x24

SIDEBOARD(15)

Gholty Prison x4

Reverse Of Sands x3

Luminous Angel x4

Ethereal Haze x4

I'm not sure what neweds to be adjusted in this deck so any advise would be helpful and I don't have any cards in the deck that I'm attached to so everything is fare game thank you.

The first thing I want to do to Wayne’s deck is drop Holy Day, Wrath of God, and Worship altogether. This is a common problem I see in similar decks: they are trying to do too much. Wayne should concentrate on making good creatures and outrunning his opponent, not creature control and protection of his life.

-4 Holy Day

-4 Worship

-4 Wrath of God

Now that we have rid the deck of some of the costlier cards, we can ditch some land. However, why don’t we throw in some acceleration in the form of Chrome Mox.

-6 Plains

+4 Chrome Mox

Now, above, I mentioned that Wayne shouldn’t be concentrating on creature control. However, a little bit never hurt, especially when it gets rid of his opponents’ dudes and not his. Thus, I suggest the new Champions card, Reciprocate.

+4 Reciprocate

Finally, to help in the quest of making this deck as aggressive as it can be, let’s throw in a full set of Bonesplitter. I’m still a huge fan of the card, and it definitely belongs in a deck with a horde of small creatures.

+4 Bonesplitter

Working our way into creatures, I totally agree with Savannah Lions, Leonin Skyhunter, and Auriok Champion. I also agree with Isamaru, Hound of Konda, but I don’t like seeing a full set in the deck – it is legendary, after all. I’d also like to drop Razor Golem, if only because it just costs too much.

-1 Isamaru, Hound of Konda

-4 Razor Golem

For more creatures, I browsed through the list of small Champions creatures, and I came up with a few. First and foremost, Samurai of the Pale Curtain, who is a lowly bear until you throw Bushido into the mix.

+4 Samurai of the Pale Curtain

Next, I found another great, smaller creature. It allows you to do a lot with extra mana, including protect your board from harm, especially as the game wears on. The only drawback? It is a legend.

+3 Eight-and-a-Half-Tails

For the last card, I had a bit of trouble deciding on what would fit well. Wayne, this is a going-out-on-a-limb card, but it might work out. If not, I would suggest substituting in a cheap flier, such as Suntail Hawk.

+4 Slith Ascendant

As for sideboard, I completely agree with Ghostly Prison – great call! A little enchantment protection is never a bad thing, so why don’t we sneak in Kami of Ancient Law.

+4 Kami of Ancient Law

Don’t be fooled, Wayne – Affinity will still be out en-masse when the sets rotate, especially with the Goblin option missing. I suggest running Relic Barrier to help swing this match-up towards your favor.

+4 Relic Barrier

Finally, let’s throw in Intrepid Hero to help combat match-ups where Wayne is outclassed in creature size.

+3 Intrepid Hero

The finished product looks something like this…

CREATURES (26):

4 Auriok Champion

3 Eight-and-a-Half-Tails

3 Isamaru,Hound of Konda

4 Leonin Skyhunter

4 Savannah Lions

4 Samurai of the Pale Curtain

4 Slith Ascendant

NON-CREATURE SPELLS (16):

4 Bonesplitter

4 Chrome Mox

4 Glorious Anthem

4 Reciprocate

LANDS (18):

18 Plains

SIDEBOARD (15):

3 Intrepid Hero

4 Kami of Ancient Law

4 Ghostly Prison

4 Relic Barrier

Hope that helps, Wayne, and good luck!

Keep those e-mails coming, and I’ll see y’all next week.
