I find it hard to believe people found things like Viridian Shaman - even going all the way back to Uktabi Orangutan - lacking. I actually think it's more that artifacts are a lot faster in recent sets than they sometimes, and Manglehorn is trying to help its controller get back on the front foot as green usually likes to be, rather than having to sit back and destroy everything it can. I could see this even slowing down Affinity if it gets down fast enough, but it is a little fragile against Shrapnel Blast and Electrostatic Bolt.

Looks like Viridian Shaman just got upstaged, or something. The first half of the effect is the same (blow up an artifact when it hits play), but the second half is a bit better. It actually would have slowed down the dreaded Saheeli Rai-Felidar Guardian combo until the latter got banned, but it's still decent counterplay against Saheeli (since the copies she makes are artifacts in addition to their usual types). It also slows down the infamous Aetherworks Marvel by a bit.

Manglehorn is a solid sideboard card. It's not great enough in combat to justify playing it over something else, and it needs a really favorable metagame (which Kaladesh does help with) to consider mainboarding. It is a reliable bit of artifact hate, though, and I can see it getting healthy amounts of play across most formats for that reason (with, oddly enough, Vintage not being out of reach; a turn 1 Manglehorn cripples a lot of the fast artifact mana the format is built around).
