Avacyn's Pilgrim (3/27)

A mostly innocuous common, Avacyn's Pilgrim is an excellent enabler for green-white builds of all kinds. Being able to ramp into larger creatures faster is always good, and the fact that Avacyn's Pilgrim adds white mana (instead of green, the usual produced mana type of green mana dorks) gives it a niche all its own. It's powerful, and it's worth considering in decks that want to turbo out big threats faster.

Have you ever tried to use Llanowar Elves to cast a three-cost card with two white mana in its cost? It's not as hard as it sounds, because since you made the deck you will presumably include things like Temple Garden or Horizon Canopy so you can lead with those as often as possible, but this guy is pretty good for that too. In larger formats, he suffers a little from the comparison with Birds of Paradise or, if you're staying in the Human tribe, Noble Hierarch. There's nothing really wrong with him, though - players of Modern will attest that there are few things better than having three mana on turn two, and he's a reason why Innistrad block Humans are such an explosive and powerful tribe.
