Lingering Souls

Lingering Souls is a lot less fancy than it looks; it's mostly just really, really efficient. It's in two colors with a lot of effects that rely on creatures coming into play and having lots of creatures in general, and it's hard to stop with any of the conventional countermeasures against either creatures or spells. It also has the unusual distinction of being banned in its block and legal everywhere else - I think the only other currently Modern-legal card in that situation is Aether Vial.

Three mana for two 1/1 flying tokens is good. Five mana, in two installments, for four of them is also good. Being able to pay this in installments makes it amazing.

Lingering Souls was long considered a bogeyman of Innistrad Standard because of synergy with Intangible Virtue and the sheer value it provides. Flashback makes it strong, and white/black is a potent color combination with a lot of fun tricks up its proverbial sleeve. It plays well with white's fondness for going "wide", and it's simply an excellent value at every point in the game.
