Crested Sunmare

One of the interesting features of ancient mythology is the importance of horses. While this guy doesn't seem to be based on a particular figure from Egyptian mythology, it actually makes complete sense that a horse would be the herald of hope and the journey through the Hour of Devastation to a new life. I think it's also fitting that he represents such a major paradigm shift in casual Magic. Not interested in horse tribal? That's fine, because in a casual Soul Sisters deck, this guy adds power to the table at a rate and a difficulty of responding that rivals Grave Titan.

A one-Horse combo on its own, Crested Sunmare is almost everything you could want in one card. If you have a way to gain life, you make an endless stream of 5/5 Horse tokens, and Crested Sunmare makes them indestructible, to boot! The indestructibility proviso means that two Sunmares will make all of your Horses indestructible, which is very hard to stop.

It has a decent body, it has a fairly easy trigger to work with (synergizes with lifelink, various life-gain triggers like Authority of the Consuls), and it works after every turn. It’s not too hard to get a veritable army of horses with a small amount of effort. Hour of Devastation and exile effects do impede Crested Sunmare and its buddies, and a lack of combat keywords is annoying, but every card has its answers.
