I guess they decided a while ago that Howling Mine-type effects were abusable, as this is the first true card of that type we've had since I think Rites of Flourishing, way back in M12. Much like with Llanowar Elves, I understand their argument but I don't agree with it; I don't want to get sidetracked, though, as I suspect a lot of us are excited right now about the fact that this card enables a lot of interesting direct damage-based strategies in multiplayer settings where they aren't always effective. It reminds me very much of the Ebony Owl Netsuke deck from Kamigawa, in its colors and in the way it wants to operate: in multipayer settings, people tend to stock (and sometimes overstock) up on card-drawing effects even before you start bouncing everything in sight.
