Card of the Day Reviews

Michael "Maikeruu" Pierno

Today's card of the day is Valorous Stance which is a two mana White instant that can either give a target creature Indestructible until end of turn or destroy a target creature with toughness four or greater.

This is a solid and flexible card that works either to protect a key card or potentially remove a serious offensive or defensive threat.

Both are a bit more situational than say target-able Hexproof or a different removal limitation, but the two on the same low cost card makes this a worthwhile addition to many decks.  It should see at least some play across formats and competitively and is an all around solid reactive card.

In Limited this is an easy inclusion for any build using White as it can remove the biggest threats or protect your own from most removal options.  In Booster this is a strong second or third pick after a White rare or if considering adding White and no Sealed deck using White should leave out two mana removal.

One of the problems with removal spells is that they are useless if your opponent doesn’t have the right type of target. The problem with protection spells is that they are dead in your hand if your opponent isn’t trying to kill your creatures. Both types of spells are situational, but if you put both effects on the same card, it reduces the likelihood that it will be useless. This is a great card for a wide variety of white decks.

I like this card. I like the Conan-style vibe that its art gives. I like having both an offensive and a defensive choice on the same card. I like that those choices make you think and plan and strategize, and aren't just Doom Blade / Divination or something equally mindless. I like that quote by Sarkhan Vol. I like this card, and I hope to play it a lot in the coming years.
