Tuesday - Vampiric Spirit

Another card from the Portal sets that is going into 8th, this time from Portal 2. A 4/3 flier for 4 is a great deal for black, as only blue and white usually get the good fliers. A very black drawback of losing 4 life when it comes into play can hurt, but if it provides you with a way to break through and win the game, then it is pretty insignificant. Besides, people pay 5 life to morph a creature frequently. Why should 4 life be a big deal?

In limited, it's big, and it flies. Evasion is always key to drafting a base set, and 888 drafts will be no different.

Limited: 4.5

Vampiric Spirit isn't too bad at all. A 4/3 Flying creature for 4, a real surprise for black. The loss of 4 life is a bit on the high side for a creature but not too bad a deal.

Constructed - Pretty good beats - 3.00

Limited - Great beats + Evasion - 4.00

Vampiric Spirit
Ooh, something appropriately costed. A decent upper end critter for a black
beat-down deck, and of course a reasonably sized flyer in limited. I doubt
he'll see a lot of play outside of limited, but at least he has potential. limited 3.8 constructed 3.1

If the "when it comes into play FROM YOUR HAND" part stays true, slide won't abuse the 4 life loss part against you. All in all a pretty solid creature. 4 mana double black for a 4/3 flyer. The life loss isn't too steep to make it pain in a grinning demon style, so its really good. This will probably see some play somewhere, but we'll have to wait to see what comes of 8th.

In limited this guys great. Turn 4 dropping this guy can win a game if they don't find some drastic way to remove him. Although his backside is burnable, thats about it. He sometimes is less amazing late game, but hes still a very solid creature.

Constructed: 3.5
Limited: 4

The Vampiric Spirit certainly is a good pick if you need a Black flier, with 4 mana and some life you're getting quite a good creature, something that is pretty rare in black for it's cost, and besides that, I like the pic : )

The Spirit can be compared to Lava Hounds, a card that doesn't have a effective evasion ability but it's 4 damage drawback can be prevented through things as COP: Red, and Worship. While the spirit's loss of life can't be prevented. Cards similar to the Vampiric Spirit are Serpent Warrior and the Eviscerator while the Spirit is certainly better then these each of them has their own functions.

It's a fun, fair costing, black flying spirit, good to have in many casual black decks.

Vampiric Spirit
Casual Rating: 3.7
