ANOTHER power card from Torment that's black!  Could this set be the reason black has been shafted of quality cards so much as of late?  Expect to see the constructed environment shaken up substantially by the Torment expansion!  A very playable sweeper card is gonna help multiple kinds of black decks... note it deals with both untargetables and Pro Black

One of the disadvantages of actually running this section is that sometimes, whether you want to or not, sometimes you see your fellow CotDers reviews before you get a chance to write your own.  Hopefully, this doesn't influence my decision.  It seems several people have thought this a pretty good card.  I'm not convinced.
People are calling this the "Black Wrath".  Maybe it is, but in my opinion, a solid mono-black archetype is going to have to emerge for this card to be all that and a bag of chips.  Is it going to?  Who knows.  The problem is this card requires a commitment to mono-black control.  I don't see Pox or Necro in the environment, so I don't think it's gonna happen.  Call this the little engine that could, but didn't.
In limited, sure, it's a bomb.  Mass critter removal, no matter how good or bad, is always a bomb in limited.  Time will tell on this card.  Have to see if it really is powerhouse, or just another card with all the potential an no deck to go into.

This card. Yeah. Hope your opponent doesn't have it.

Wrath of God Rating: Foul and twisted like the very swamp.

Mutilate is not only an extremely powerful spell, but also an extremely important one.  It would be enough for people to consider making black a main color, even without the other black support coming in Torment.  It's under-costed mass creature removal, only outdone by Wrath of God, in an environment where creatures are an essential part of nearly every popular deck type (I'm referring to the type 2 environment, but I have no doubt the same will be true of Odyssey block).

Mutilate looks to be a stellar card in Constructed
since it could fit right in, and bring back, Black
Control.  In Limited, I think that it will face the
problem of not being able to stop fatties and the fact
that you will probably have to draft more than one
color which will hurt your -X/-X factor.  All in all,
I think it's a pretty solid card.

This card is amazing. Black gets mass removal for a total cost of 4. I won't sat it is the best black card ever but I bet it is in the top 10. I can hear suicide black players panting all over the world. They can blow up the board then drop yesterday's card of the day (Nantuko Shade) and pump him to at least a 6 power hit for the opponent's dome. This card once again proves the alliance between certain WOTC designers and the forces of darkness and corruption.

Rating 5 for Constructed and limited. WOTC designers batting average for the week 1 hit /2 at bats = .500

B/? control decks just got a HUGE weapon.  There will
no longer be a reason to use white for Wrath of God
anymore, as that is what you've got right here.  Most
everything in the environment can be taken out by FTK,
so only 4 swamps means this spell can take out just
about everything too.  No regenerating, no questions,
just dead.
In Limited, this is significantly weaker for 2
reasons.  It is hard to build a limited deck yourself
that won't be creature dominated, and you will have a
hard time finding enough swamps to make Mutilate
worthwhile.  The heavy black content in Torment may
scue this a bit though.

Constructed Rating: 4
Limited Rating: 2

I-N-S-A-N-E !!

Talk about madness.  This card is never bad if you are playing black.

Constructed: 4.4
Limited : 4.6

In limited, Mutilate is obviously a bomb and scores a 5.  Any Wrath that you
can actually decide how big you want it to be some of the time can be a game
breaker.  In Constructed, I think it will actually find play, and is much
better than some of the alternatives.  Still it is not a Wrath of God as
some creatures can survive through different measures (for example this
won't kill Psychatog most likely).  A 4.5 in Constructed.
